Fire Drill Fridays is an exciting collaboration between Greenpeace and Jane Fonda to raise attention about the need for climate action equal to the scale of the problem, communicate a sense of urgency, provide accessible information about the climate crisis to demystify it, help people overcome their apathy and despair, and inspire others to act by taking bold action alongside known and trusted cultural icons.  In just its first four months, Fire Drill Fridays has both ignited and tapped into the growing sense of urgency that something must be done - and it is clear that we are the ones who must do it. It is time for bold, broad, and courageous advocacy and activism.  

Now that 2020 is here, we're ready to take the next step for Fire Drill Fridays to continue and become a national project bringing in activists from around the country. The Digital Strategist role is integral to the aspirations and structure, managing and driving the online tools to communicate our mission and values and organize/mobilize hundreds of thousands of existing and potential activists

This position will be located in Washington, DC or Oakland, CA 

Overview:

This is a fast-paced, high-impact position that will lead the development of the FDF digital engagement strategy, working closely with the Lead Organizer and Project Lead to reach new audiences through engaging content, humour, reactive and proactive opportunities to help widen the tent of climate activism and bring about massive change within the next 10 years. 

The Digital Strategist will deftly juggle running the Fire Drill Fridays social channels, suggesting content to the GPUS social channels, crafting a supporter journey and related email text, and designing content. This person will identify opportunities, set ambitious goals for projects, collaborate with key stakeholders to advance distributed organizing work, deepen engagement, and win campaign victories.

This role will:

  • Serve as the digital lead and core organizing team member for Fire Drill Fridays and work with GPUS digital team as required.
  • Design experimental, creative and often humorous content for FDF channels; jump on opportunities to promote viral content and increase FDFs relevance online.
  • Test and iterate based on real-time response, and tailor and develop the identity of the channels accordingly. 
  • Develop strategy and work plan for Fire Drill Fridays digital engagement with a view to grow FDF channels by engaging new audiences. 
  • Identify responsive opportunities that could be scaled into mobilization bumps and collaborate with the team to maximize.
  • Follow and test best practices and innovations for email, social media, mobile, web and online-offline mobilization.
  • Make key decisions on project output, using expertise and insights from relevant team members or organizational stakeholders as well as testing and performance data. 
  • Perform other job-related duties as required 

Minimum requirements include:

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in digital communications and public engagement, with environmental or social justice organizations preferred, but we are excited to welcome digital experts from other sectors and industries as well.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in digital engagement with advocacy, political, or charitable organizations
  • Minimum 2 years experience in project or people management with a strong track record of producing creative, successful output.

Additional requirements include, but not limited to:

  • Expertise in digital engagement strategies and tactics including digital campaign planning, expertise in all relevant channels (email, social media, mobile, web), fundraising, and online-to-offline organizing
  • Strong and playful graphic design skills.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities at once, including both short-term responsive work and long-term capacity-building work
  • Keen judgment about what will work with key audiences, advance engagement goals, and organizational capacity.
  • Strong project leadership and project planning skills to enable the delivery of projects to time, to budget and to deliver on clear objectives.
  • A belief in creating a culture of feedback, ensuring to foster positivity, emotional intelligence and support within the team at all times 
  • Track record of developing creative campaign content that engages diverse communities and deepens relationships with existing supporters
  • Excellent communication skills, including both written and interpersonal, including willingness to facilitate conflict resolution and offer direct feedback
  • Willingness to work outside normal business hours on occasion;
  • Commitment to anti-oppression framework, progressive values and peaceful direct action as a means to effect change
  • Demonstrated commitment to the organization's values on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
  • Excellent spoken and written English; Fluency in Spanish desired
