[jobsthatareLEFT by GAIN] Progressive New York Congressional Challenger Seeks Field Organizers for June 23rd Primary

Suraj for NY Field Organizer Job Description

Background: Patel is challenging incumbent Carolyn Maloney for the congressional seat in New York's 12th District and is running to restore the promise of New York - education, opportunity, and mobility. He is the son of Indian immigrants, for whom the traditional pathways to social mobility were shut off in the 1960s. Like many immigrant families, they started a business; Suraj grew up bussing tables, filling vending machines, and doing hotel laundry to build their American Dream. In one generation, Suraj was able to go to college, become an attorney, and work for President Barack Obama. Suraj is running to restore the promise of New York -- education, opportunity, and mobility -- for every family in New York's 12th Congressional District.

In 2018, Patel challenged Maloney and won 41% of the vote, nearly doubling turnout and increasing millennial turnout 800% in the district. This year, we believe we can win through diligent persuasion and mobilization efforts across the district.

Job Description: We are seeking field organizers to start March 1 and work through the end of June. This is an opportunity to work on an exciting, young campaign that plans to win by dramatically increasing millennial voting in New York's District 12. We're looking for people with some campaign experience, but most importantly, with enthusiasm for the candidate. Organizers will report directly to the Field Director.

Responsibilities: Organizers will be the local face of Suraj for NY. Primary responsibilities will include recruiting volunteers, developing and leading community events, and standard voter contact efforts—calls, texts, and 1:1 meetings. Our campaign anticipates having a very large intern and fellow cohort, so field organizers will also have some staff management responsibilities.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Passion for electing progressive candidates to Congress

  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Ability to work long, irregular hours in a fast paced, metrics driven work environment

  • Ability to work independently and in team settings

  • Experience with VAN is preferred but not required

  • Excellent organizational skills including a high-degree of comfort with using Google Docs/Sheets/Slides/etc.

Location: Our headquarters is in the East Village of NYC. We anticipate opening 1-2 satellite offices across the district, where the Field Organizers would be de facto office managers.
