POSITION DESCRIPTION

America Votes is seeking a talented leader with a record of success in coalition building, electoral campaigns, and issue campaigns. The Colorado State Director is primarily responsible for leading and supporting state, local, and national America Votes partner organizations in the development and execution of a coordinated plan that maximizes the priorities, resources, and effectiveness of all partners. The Colorado State Director will ensure short-term programs and elections advance the shared long-term vision for progressive change in Colorado, including growing the coalition as needed to achieve those goals, coordinating strategies between state and national partners to win elections, and will be expected to act with appropriate discretion and respect for confidentiality requirements. The Colorado State Director reports to the National Field Director of America Votes


LOCATION

This position is based in Denver, Colorado.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coalition Leadership: Work with America Votes partner organizations to design overall statewide and ballot-level specific electoral and voter education plans based on achieving long-term priorities developed by in-state partner organizations and stakeholders. Create and drive the strategy in state work plans inclusive of all campaign elements that eliminate duplication and create efficiency. Evaluate and report to stakeholder's partner program outcomes and monitor progress toward goals. Work with America Votes national development team to identify in-state funding opportunities to support America Votes operations and partner-led programs tied to the state plan.
  • Staff Management: Manage state staff of America Votes, including development of work plans, professional development, and ongoing supervision and support. The State Director will be a natural mentor and coach, facilitating a culture in which staff feel valued and supported. S/he/they will implement America Votes organizational goals and manage staff toward delivering on the shared goals of the organization.
  • Coalition Management: Convene individual coalition partners and the collective table on a regular basis, facilitating discussions, decision making, and other critical work of the group. Assist local organizations in identifying resources and other technical assistance that can build capacity and improve their performance, the shared strategy, and organization-specific campaign plans. Ensure the security, development, and appropriate usage of the state voter file. Implement systems for ongoing evaluation of effectiveness of strategies. Work directly with national staff and national partners to ensure smooth communication with state operations, while also learning from and sharing best practices with other states. Explore strategic opportunities to expand coalition membership and key partnerships and collaborations with community stakeholders. Facilitate a collaborative and productive state coalition environment that advances racial equity goals.
  • Equity and Inclusion: Facilitate ongoing conversations and collective steps toward greater clarity and measurable action toward equity in the work of the coalition and partner members.
  • Advance Election Modernization: Develop and implement ongoing programs and legislative advocacy related to election modernization in collaboration with voting rights organizations and advocates.
  • Advance Coalition Program: Oversee and support the development of training curriculum and programs to maximize shared learning amongst partners. Oversee the ongoing implementation of shared coalition campaigns that may include electoral field programs and other efforts as the shared state plan dictates.
  • Additional duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED

  • Experience working with underrepresented and/or historically marginalized communities, preferably in campaign or organizing settings.
  • Demonstrated expert level ability to exercise excellent political judgement and discretion.
  • A strategic and comprehensive approach to organizational and coalition planning and decision making; the ability to lead through periods of political transition and membership expansion, requiring creative and innovative solutions to real time, on-the-ground challenges. Ability to recognize and capitalize on political opportunities while staying mission-aligned;
  • Proven track record of exceptional staff management, support, and development, fostering a culture of collaboration, mentoring, and regular feedback;
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate, build consensus, and strategically disagree. Must be respected by progressive stakeholders and be trusted to lead. Demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts while maintaining important and effective relationships
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment as well as independently. 
  • Proficiency in Google Suite tools or MS Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint). Excellent writing and presentation skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to understand and synthesize data, using it to inform strategy and problem solve.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle a variety of projects simultaneously. 
  • Expertise in electoral field program management, staff management, and basic data and targeting understanding. Ability to write, evaluate, and execute winning campaign plans with a strong field component required.
  • Applicants must be a self-starter; be willing to work long and irregular hours and to travel as needed.

PREFERRED

  • Experience with IE campaigns and VAN preferred.
  • Candidates with knowledge or background in Colorado politics, Colorado legislature, and organizations preferred.
  • Applicants ideally have a mix of both electoral or advocacy campaign experience and organizing skills. Successful management or participation in a coalition environment preferred.
  • Experience with digital programs, new voter contact technologies, and program testing and evaluation a plus

COMPENSATION

Salary is commensurate with experience, $80,000 - $88,000. Benefits include health, dental, vision and 401(k).
