Position Overview

Michigan Liberation is seeking a Field Director to lead our voter engagement program across 3 different Michigan counties. There will be a mix of implementing programs to meet goals, create strategy, track data, and manage & train staff.

Michigan Liberation conducts grassroots organizing, leadership development, lobbying and supports candidates that share our vision for Michigan.

Michigan Liberation promotes changes in all areas of the criminal legal system, including courts, prosecutors, policing, prisons, juvenile systems, re-entry and diversion programs, and parole.


Responsibilities

The Field Director is responsible for implementing Michigan Liberation's 2020 statewide political field program which includes: overseeing phone, text, and relational organizing program goals across 3 counties; training and coaching staff; ensuring volunteer engagement programs are implemented; problem solving; communication & reporting on progress to goals; and most importantly: commitment to liberation, equity and inclusion. We believe in transformative justice and developing the leadership of people who have been directly impacted by mass incarceration. 


The Field Director will:

  • Be the person responsible for making sure our voter engagement programs are on track. This includes phone, texting, relational organizing, mail, and more!

  • Directly manage staff that are leading our paid canvass, and support other staff to think through how to integrate voter engagement into their organizing, campaign, and communications work.

  • Design and implement a Vote By Mail program

  • Holding the big picture of winning campaigns, messages, priority turf, program passes, and goals along with the day to day details of getting it done.

  • Proactive identification of problems & ways to solve them, including staff management, HR issues, political strategy, and external circumstances.

  • Overseeing integration of paid and volunteer voter contact programs

  • Quick daily reports sent to Campaign Director, County Directors and EDs about progress and challenges.

  • Work closely with the EDs on budgeting & hiring


Priority Qualifications

  • Commitment to racial, gender and social justice

  • Experience working with diverse viewpoints and people

  • Experience with policies and workplace culture of equity and inclusion

  • Experience managing projects with multiple deliverables and people

  • 2 years of political/campaign experience, specific to voter engagement

  • Proficiency with VAN, Google Docs, texting, phone banking, and relational organizing tools

  • Excellent time management

  • Attention to detail

  • Volunteer training experience

  • Excellent references

  • Strong communication

  • Openness to feedback and learning

  • Reliability: you do what you say you'll do

  • Experience with turf cutting in VAN and canvass hub management

  • Cell phone with text & data


Qualifications that would give you a boost

  • Experience working on c3, c4 and IE projects and knowledge of election rules

  • Data management experience

  • Project management experience

  • Supervisory/Management experience

  • Experience with Voter Registration & Vote by Mail programs

  • Experience managing multiple regions

  • Community organizing background


Location

This job will be based remotely through August 14th, with potential to extend through the end of November. Michigan Liberation is practicing caution, in regards to in-person engagement, however, should we resume in-person operations, this position will be based in Detroit. With things changing often, we welcome questions about this.

Compensation commensurate to $50,000 a year annual salary. This will be a full-time W-2 position through August 14th with a possibility of extension through the end of November. It will include $200/month to cover cell, gas, computer, and family care expenses. Paid time off will be prorated to start date, based on 18 days per year. Health care will be offered after 30 days of full-time employment.
