POSITION SUMMARY: Detroit Action seeks a talented leader to enhance our campaigns through arts and storytelling as we embark on our most ambitious electoral and issue organizing field program to date. To shift culture, we must create and organize culture that replaces the old narratives that have locked working class Black and Brown people and other marginalized identities out of politics and power here in Michigan. Cultural Organizer will help to create and manage partnerships with artists, media makers, and cultural institutions. The Cultural organizer will help integrate creativity, storytelling, imagination, and attention-getting energy into our civic engagement and community-building practice. The ideal candidate is a passionate, creative and detail-oriented organizer and creative. He/She/They care deeply about racial and economic justice while valuing the power of art and story. This opportunity will use your knowledge of media, music, and more, in combination with your organizing talents to shift how and who we are organizing.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Hiring, managing and training team of yearly Cultural Fellows to integrate art and creativity with civic engagement and community-building.
- Develop and build a network of local artists whose personal stories and art tell the stories of our communities in a compelling and relatable way
- Work with our Detroit Action Digital team and other content creators to support our overall narrative strategy in line with our values and to amplify our communications strategy in support of our campaigns.
- Recruit and organize creative activists working in multiple mediums to work with Detroit Action members and staff to tell their stories in new and interesting ways
- Provide artists and institutions with stories and support for their activities with fan bases, audiences, and networks.
- Coordinate with partners to have live events to engage volunteers and build enthusiasm for our campaigns in community
- Recruit and work with creative partners to develop concepts that build excitement for our issue work, and can help to recruit new members to the organization promoting involvement for our mission and programs.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Proven written and oral communication skills
- Experience with and ability to work within diverse and underrepresented communities
- Project management skill and attention to detail
- Creativity and imagination
- Be able to think creatively and outside the box
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
The Cultural Organizer reports to the Communications Manager and works collaboratively with the Digital Organizers, other staff, contractors, vendors and other partners on a weekly basis to maintain program efficiency. Detroit Action and Detroit Action Education Fund are projects of Tides Center and Tides Advocacy.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to lift boxes of training materials. Able to attend conferences throughout the United States. Must be able to travel domestically on an airplane 4-8 times a year. Must be able to drive and have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The position is a full-time position that works 35 hours per week. This position is based in an office building in Detroit, MI – The position will be required to work some weekends (Saturday and Sunday). The position may require national travel up to 100% of the time. The assigned workspace is a cubicle in an open and shared work area with a moderate level of noise and interruptions.
About the Organization:
Detroit Action is a hosted project of Tides Center and Tides Advocacy. We are affiliate partners of the Center for Popular Democracy (CPD) and the Alliance for Youth Action. The successful candidate will receive generous benefits as provided by Tides. The salary will be determined according to a salary scale which takes into account years' experience, location, job category, and other factors, but is expected to be $45,000-$50,000.
