Campus Organizer

The Organization

This position is as a campus organizer with the New York State Democratic Party in NY-24.

The Race

Dana Balter is a progressive educator and organizer running to be the first woman to represent New York's 24th district in Congress. The DCCC has designated this one of Democrats' top Red-to-Blue opportunities to expand our majority. The district is in upstate New York and the largest city is Syracuse. Dana has been endorsed by EMILY's List, Planned Parenthood, Indivisible, End Citizens United, the Working Families Party, the PCCC, Democracy for America, and the Congressional Progressive Caucus who are all targeting this as a top-priority race in 2020. Dana ran a strong grassroots campaign as the Democratic nominee in 2018, closing a 20 point gap and now just needs to move 2.5 points to flip the seat this November.

Job Description

The campus organizer will build and manage a strong cross-campus fellowship program, bringing in college and high school students to engage their peers on-campus and voters off-campus. The district includes Syracuse University, Lemoyne College, SUNY ESF, SUNY Oswego, Onondaga Community College, Cayuga Community College, and Wells College. The fellowship program will be one critical piece of our movement to put power in the hands of the people where it belongs.

Reports To: Organizing Director

Responsibilities Include

  • Recruiting, managing, and training college and high school fellows to participate in executing the campaign's direct voter contact plan.

  • Develop a plan to register new voters on campus, build a student volunteer base, execute events on campus, and educate students about the district and the race.

  • Utilize creative digital means in partnership with the mobilization director to reach students during a time when in-person events are rarer and more challenging.

  • Work closely with the team of organizers to have fellows assist with the broader field efforts.

Ideal Characteristics

  • Comfort and experience organizing or working with high school and/or college students.

  • Genuine passion about progressive politics and fighting for a better future for everyone.

  • A hard-working, honest, and self-disciplined emerging leader with the ability to work long hours.

  • Ability to contribute to a positive, collaborative, safe, welcoming, and inspiring work environment for all members of the team—including fellow staff, volunteers, and fellows.

  • A cycle or two of experience as paid campaign staff, an intern, or a volunteer is ideal but not required.

  • A car or reliable form of transportation and a laptop are required.

Compensation is $3,500/month along with the option to participate in the state party's health insurance program.  This position requires you to relocate to the district through November. Supporter housing may be a possibility upon inquiry. Interested applicants should send their resume to Josh at nyredtoblue@gmail.com.
