Context: The Sierra Club is the largest and oldest grassroots environmental organization in the country. Our mission is to practice and promote the responsible use of the earth's ecosystems and resources; educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment; and, to use all lawful means to carry out these objectives. With over 800 staff, 64 chapters across all 50 states, 4,000 volunteer leaders, and a supporter base of 4 million people, the Club is committed to mobilizing its resources to work for climate and racial justice.

Currently, the Sierra Club is in the middle of an organizational transformation. The Digital Department is central to this as we think about how to build, mobilize, and engage our base to fight for climate justice. The Digital Strategies department, with almost 80 staff, is a key player in our powerbuilding and organizing work. The organization and the Digital Strategies team are going through a significant amount of change, and the Digital Strategies team requires senior leadership to support the needs of staff, support the Head of the Digital Department with change management processes, and bring an expert analysis and applied practice of movement building to the team. The Sierra Club centers key principles of equity, justice, and inclusion in every aspect of our work.

Scope: A Sierra Club Deputy Director is committed to modeling the Jemez Principles and our organizational Equity Values, including demonstrating a commitment to self-transformation and the transformation of our organization.

As the Deputy for the department, you will ensure success by focusing on internal needs for 80+ people, meaning building and supporting managers, workers, and units for a stronger department. As one of the most senior management roles in Digital Strategies, you will have your hands in a bit of everything from personnel and project management to running national programs to working closely with our Chapter and volunteer staff.

Part thoughtful strategist, part professional coach, you are the kind of person that loves figuring out how people work best and then ensuring that they are motivated and have everything they need to do so.

No two days will be the same, but in this role you will typically:

  • Support the Department Head with the overall direction of the department, including departmental vision and change management processes; coordinating with consultants; developing and executing internal communications and stakeholder engagement plans; creating channels for ongoing feedback
  • Help build the "people infrastructure" for the department -- team culture, best practices in management, leadership development, talent development, and more. Provides creative solutions to solve challenges effectively while consulting and seeking input from others.
  • Work closely with the Department Head to ensure that the Digital Strategies department is staffed, resourced, and managed to fulfill the department vision of technology as a space for building power
  • Managing Senior staff by providing guidance and direction, conducting performance evaluations and ongoing feedback, building equitable hiring and management practices and providing training and development for the department.
  • Developing and maintaining strong relationships with colleagues throughout Sierra Club to build a base for cross-organization collaboration, representing the Digital Department to other departments by providing briefings, perspectives and strategic advice.
  • Managing a high level of confidential information about Sierra Club business, budget, personnel, and partners. A background check will be required upon job acceptance.
  • Other special projects and management assignments as assigned

You will be successful in this role if you have:

  • At least 6 years of experience as a senior manager (or comparable position), which includes substantive experience building and managing teams or large projects. You have experience at a grassroots organization with digital campaigning and advocacy, as well as a focus on community organizing and movement building.
  • A background in movement building, community organizing, and coalition building
  • Demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of how race dynamics impact supervisory relationships, organizational culture, partnerships, campaigns and coalition work, and can demonstrate a history of successfully intervening in problematic dynamics and deepening a racial justice approach within an organization, team, or campaign
  • Facilitation and convening experience; must be able to hold and manage large team meetings (online and in person)
  • Strong team management skills, including the ability to manage managers, foster a culture of collaboration, respect, and open dialogue across geographically dispersed teams
  • Skillful team player and collaborator – can facilitate and mediate state or regional teams, set goals and strategies across campaigns and capacities
  • Demonstrated experience developing strategy, oversight of organizational operations, planning and managing programs and campaigns, managing program and staff, planning and managing budget, working with external partners.
  • Track record of innovation and creativity coupled with technical expertise and an understanding of best practices and industry trends in digital strategies.
  • Deep data-orientation, particularly around using data and metrics to make informed decisions around strategy, and measure success.
  • Resilient and flexible, with the ability to continually experiment, learn, and revise strategies.
  • A positive energy and good humor that engenders enthusiasm and collaboration.
  • A passion for the Sierra Club's commitment to environmental and social justice.

Compensation & Benefits:

The salary range for this role is $160,000 - $180,000 per year.

Sierra Club employees enjoy a comprehensive benefits program including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, flexible spending accounts, employee assistance program, short- and long-term disability insurance.
