Policy and Advocacy Director and Caring Economy Program Director 

Caring Economy Program Director Description

The Ohio Organizing Collaborative (OOC) is an innovative statewide organization that unites community organizing groups, labor unions, faith organizations and policy institutes across Ohio. It is our mission to organize everyday Ohioans, building transformative power for racial, social, and economic justice in our state. www.ohorganizing.org

OOC seeks an experienced organizer to build a grassroots organizing project focused on building power with women, especially women of color who work in the care economy. OOC Program Directors build grassroots power bases and hire, develop and train a team of staff organizers to do the same. Specifically, the Caring Economy Program Director will build, train, and lead teams of people impacted by Ohio's social safety net and people working in the childcare industry.

Required Skills & Abilities

The Program Director is a self-motivated and detail-oriented critical thinker with a strong track record of successfully and concurrently managing a variety of initiatives. They are committed to the principles of social justice, have an extensive background in organizing, and know how to build a base, wield power, develop campaigns, and manage a team of organizers. An OOC Program Director possesses strong planning and organizational skills, strong time management skills, strong relational and interpersonal skills, and strong written and oral communication skills. Ideally, she has at least five to ten years of organizing experience, has a current power base, and is proficient in civic engagement, strategic communications, legislative advocacy and coalition building.

Job Responsibilities

● Build and sustain a grassroots power base in Ohio

● Manage a team of organizers to develop and implement campaign plans on local and statewide issues

● Develops work plans and a yearly professional development plan for staff and evaluates their performance.

● Able to work with leaders across race, class, and gender to align different interests towards a common goal of building community power to win progressive reforms

● Identifies and develops community power building relationships with a broad base of grassroots groups

● Works with grassroots groups and leaders to recruit people into building volunteer teams, educate and motivate people to take action around local and statewide racial, economic, and social justice issues.

● Identifies issues and works with teams to strategize and implement short- and long-term campaigns at the local, regional, and statewide levels

● Trains organizers and grassroots leaders and groups to identify issues with attainable goals through engaging leadership base in participatory research and political education

● Organizes [a] outreach activities with volunteers including canvassing, phone/texting banking, and tabling, [b] leadership development and organizing activities such as trainings, leadership and committee meetings, and [c] large-scale actions including community conversations, town halls, public meetings, and direct actions.

● Integrates community organizing with long-term, community-driven policy change efforts

● Participates in campaign framing and messaging, including collaborating on talking points, press releases, reports, social media, and other communications materials as necessary

● Participate in fundraising efforts including reporting and supporting efforts with foundation grants, individual donors, and membership dues.

● Attend and actively participate in team and statewide meetings, meet regularly with supervisor, submit all reports in a timely manner, and attend professional organizer training as required

● Has some understanding of the intersection between race, class, and gender's effect on socio economic policy and believes in progressive values

Position Details 

The Program Director is a full-time salaried position. A Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience is preferred but persons meeting the skills listed above should still apply. Benefits include health/dental insurance, vacation, and retirement match. The Program Director must possess a cell phone, an Ohio driver's license and have access to a reliable automobile. In-state and national travel is required. Some weekend and evening hours will be required. Work-related expenses are reimbursed according to policy. Physical requirements include frequent standing, walking, ability to sit in meetings and lift moderate weight for supplies.

Experience and Salary Range Salary Range $75,000 - $90,000. Previous organizing experience is required, preferably within the Ohio Organizing Collaborative or similar organization. Must have demonstrated ability to build a base and wield power for progressive change. Must have extensive relationships in relevant communities in Ohio.

Policy and Advocacy Director Job Description

We are a coalition of organizations across the state. It is our mission to organize everyday Ohioans, building transformative power for racial, social, and economic justice in our state. The OOC seeks an experienced policy advocate, legislative strategist and coalition manager to execute [1] OOC's redistricting coalition organizing program, [2] act as OOC's chief lobbyist, and [3] oversee OOC's legislative priorities and program. This role would oversee two programs: our redistricting program and our legislative program. OOC is a key partner in the 2021 redistricting program and will focus on leading the grassroot mobilization committee. The focus of the Grassroots Mobilization committee will be to take the lead on all public-facing strategies (monikered "All in for Ohio") and to create public engagement opportunities for grassroots leaders with stakeholders who are charged with drawing the maps. Additionally, the OOC's has a robust legislative agenda connected to the state budget process in 2021. Our legislative agenda will focus on issues of democracy, economic relief & recovery, and criminal justice reform.

Excellent writer and communicator with a comfort communicating with diverse audiences. Skilled project manager who can direct themselves and others. They are committed to the principles of social justice and have a strong leadership background, and have experience working successfully in politically sensitive and high-pressure environments.

Job Responsibilities

Redistricting Program (75%)

● Manage in-state political relationships and serve as the coalition chair of the grassroots mobilization committee to promote coordination and collaboration with state partners.

● Works with University Partner to develop community commission for the redistricting process.

● Convene the grassroots mobilization committee and implement the organizing strategy with state partners.

● Work with OOC Co-Directors to develop the organizing strategy and public engagement opportunities.

● Works with grassroots groups and leaders to recruit people into building volunteer teams, educate and motivate people to take action around the redistricting process.

● Track developments in the local legislative and reform landscape that may affect the campaign's mission.

● Capability to manage partner relationships, experts, and volunteers as needed

● Able to work with leaders across race, class, and gender to align different interests towards a common goal of building community power to win progressive reforms

● Identifies points of alignment and works with state partners to strategize and implement campaign goals in their local organization.

● Create state priority issues with Co-Executive Directors and coordinate with organizing staff to align them with local campaigns.

● Strategize and create action plans to advance legislative issues.

● Work with in-state policy partners to research state legislation and prepare memoranda to analyze and outline response options.

● Prepare state legislative testimony with grassroots leaders to be used by legislative committees.

● Develop, check and revise legislation to satisfy state legislative agenda.

● Represent OOC at state conferences, hearings and meetings.

Salary Range: $70,000 - $90,000.
