Job Posting: Lead Organizer, Motor City Freedom Riders
Motor City Freedom Riders (MCFR) is a metro Detroit organization of bus riders and allies, mobilizing people in Detroit and across the metropolitan region to build grassroots power and win improvements to public transit. We believe that transportation is freedom, and reliable regional public transit is fundamental to the 21st-century struggle for civil rights and economic and racial justice.
Position Description:
Motor City Freedom Riders is seeking a Lead Organizer to direct our movement-building efforts with Detroit area bus riders. The Lead Organizer will work to develop our team of Rider Advocates, expand the MCFR membership and execute successful campaigns for improved public transit. Campaign duties include managing campaign resources and expenses, coordinating volunteers and building volunteer leadership. The Lead Organizer will also oversee day-to-day operational aspects of MCFR, prepare and submit regular progress reports to the Board, and represent the Motor City Freedom Riders to government officials, the media, allies, other organizations, and the public. The Lead Organizer will report to the co-chairs of our Board of Directors.
Responsibilities:
1. Facilitates development of strategic campaign plans, goals and objectives for MCFR, working in collaboration with the Rider Advocate team. Leads implementation of campaigns to improve public transit in metropolitan Detroit.
2. Conducts outreach to metro Detroit bus riders and coordinates our organizing to build an engaged membership and volunteer base.
3. Engages elected officials, appointed decision makers, and other key players in public transit to ensure the advancement of MCFR priorities. Represents MCFR to the general public and to strategic allies.
4. Produces educational and advocacy materials, conducts research, and offers professional expertise to help further the goals of the organization. Offers training to volunteers and ensures that they assume meaningful roles in MCFR in keeping with our mission as a membership organization.
5. Directs media outreach activities related to campaigns. Serves as MCFR spokesperson to media outlets and promotes volunteer media exposure.
6. Supports organizational growth and development by leading fundraising activities, pursuing grants, and obtaining other resources.
7. Introduces creative ideas and approaches for consideration.
8. Handles miscellaneous projects and duties as needed.
Knowledge and Skills:
∙ High school diploma or GED equivalent. BA/BS degree is a plus.
∙ At least 3 years' experience in the planning and implementation of grassroots organizing campaigns (preferably including work other than candidate campaigns), managing volunteer leadership, media and communications, and/or work with local government.
∙ Experience working effectively with people of a wide range of racial and economic backgrounds, and in particular with metro Detroit bus riders, who are primarily African American and low-income.
∙ Demonstrated ability to work in a challenging political landscape to advance policy goals.
∙ Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated public speaking and media presentation ability.
∙ Substantial experience and demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.
∙ Self-directed and comfortable working independently.
∙ Valid driver's license or own transportation not required.
Location: Detroit, Michigan
Benefits and Compensation:
Minimum compensation is $20/hour, for an expected 30-40 hours of work per week. We will negotiate a higher wage based on the candidate's level of experience. Flexible, self-directed work hours, including some weekends and evenings. Initial contract will be for 6 months, renewal terms contingent on funding availability and the mutual agreement of both parties. Although this will be an independent contractor arrangement, paid time off will be provided. The Lead Organizer will receive free monthly bus passes.
