The Organizing Manager/Organizing Director (title and salary based on experience, skill-set, and scope of work) is a full-time non-exempt position.
The position will be remote until we reach a point in the COVID-19 emergency when best practices allow for in-person contact, and at that point will require travel throughout Pennsylvania.
Who we are: The Asian Pacific Islander Political Alliance's (API PA) mission is to build long-term power for APIs in Pennsylvania, by coordinating political, electoral, and legislative work to hold our elected officials accountable, engaging in culturally competent and linguistically accessible direct voter contact with our communities, and building solidarity with other aligned communities of color across the state.
We operate primarily in South Asian, Korean, Chinese, and Vietnamese communities, and are the first and only political organization directly advocating for the needs of Asian and Pacific Islanders in Pennsylvania. We won't stop until our people have political power and our communities have everything we need to be safe, healthy, and strong – and we're excited to work with you to make that happen.
Organizing Manager/Organizing Director: Reporting to the Executive Director, the Organizing Manager/Organizing Director will coordinate, manage, and implement API PA's short-term basebuilding and electoral strategies to build power in and for Asian communities in Pennsylvania, with an emphasis on Southeastern PA, the Lehigh Valley, and Central PA. The person in this role is responsible for building relationships with Asian community leaders, managing organizing staff, managing direct voter contact activities, coordinating issue organizing around community priorities, and anything else needed to advance the cause of building Asian power in Pennsylvania. While this is a management position, our team is small and we will be looking for applicants to be ready to engage in the same volunteer and member recruitment and turnout activities their staff will be conducting.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage community and distributed organizing staff for both Pan-Asian and community-specific organizing efforts; hold staff accountable to meeting goals
- Coordinate efforts to register, identify, educate, persuade, and mobilize Asian voters in PA about supported candidates and issue priorities; manage engagement with non-API communities and voters as needed, especially during election season
- Manage volunteer or paid voter contact efforts for Asian voters in PA
- Recruit for, plan, and participate in a range of 501(c)(4) grassroots advocacy activities across PA, such as supporter recruitment, member engagement, and campaigns
- Build intentional relationships with Asian communities, organizations, and leaders who can support cross-collaboration efforts with API PA; manage relationships with non-API partner organizations and represent API PA at tables and coalitions as needed
- Maintain activist database (The VAN) to track supporters, volunteers, and events, and use data to identify strategic ways to engage supporters; Ensure quality and timely data entry, management and reporting
- Serve as an organizational spokesperson as necessary to the media, to the community, and on social media; work with digital/comms staff to ensure digital, comms, and press work is integrated with organizing strategy and vice versa
- As necessary, coordinate or personally engage in lobbying efforts at the local, state, and federal levels to advance API PA's policy priorities
- Implement internal and external development programming to grow skill set, experience, and leadership of staff, members, and volunteers
- Serve as a thought partner to leadership on growing organizational infrastructure and influence; support fundraising efforts (primarily by providing program updates) as needed
Qualifications:
- There is no formal education requirement for this position. Ideal candidates will have at least 3 years of community, issue, or electoral organizing experience and 1 year or election cycle of management experience (or equivalent).
- You understand the fundamentals of organizing, the difference between organizing and mobilization, and deeply believe your job is to support organizers help people step into leadership and drive change on the issues that affect their lives.
- Experience operating in and/or organizing Asian communities
- Commitment to the mission and values of API PA
- Demonstrated ability to think on your feet and grow quickly in your role, including the ability to adapt to new technology and platforms
- Ability to clarify long-term and emerging work priorities for self and direct reports to meet the demands of a sometimes quick-shifting political and work environment, open to a flexible schedule that includes a few nights and weekends per month regularly and more during election cycles
- Demonstrated experience with supervising and managing others, with the ability to support organizers with their growth edges while also holding them and others (whether staff, members, or volunteers) accountable to their commitments
- Strong training, facilitation, and relationship-building skills
- Regular access to transportation
Preferred, not required:
- Conversational grasp of at least one Asian language
- Familiarity with the dynamics of Asian communities in Pennsylvania
- Experience with and knowledge of Pennsylvania's political terrain
- Knowledge of campaign finance law as it pertains to 501c3 and 501c4 organizations, as well as the operation of an Independent Expenditure program
- Familiarity with organizational technology, including voter file CRMs (especially the VAN), Google Suite, peer-to-peer SMS and predictive dialer platforms.
