Summary:
The Washington Center for Equitable Growth is a nonprofit research and grantmaking organization dedicated to advancing evidence-backed ideas and policies that promote strong, stable, and broad-based economic growth. Equitable Growth engages with academics and policymakers to better understand economic inequality in the United States and its impact on economic growth. Important elements of Equitable Growth's mission include in-house, academic-quality research, and grantmaking to academic economists and other social scientists to support new research on inequality, mobility, growth, and related issues. Building a stronger bridge between academics and the policy community and elevating researchers and their work with the news media are both key to our work, with the goal of making new research relevant, accessible, and informative to the policymaking process.

The Senior Communications Associate plays a key role in elevating cutting-edge research on economic inequality and its impact on economic growth and stability, as well as evidence-based policies that emerge from that research. The ideal candidate will have between 3 years and 5 years of experience working in communications and a proven track record of engaging with the media and securing results. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting the Senior Communications Manager with planning and managing day-to-day media relations and digital communications activities across several economic policy areas, such as family economic security and economic mobility.
 
Responsibilities:
• Respond to media requests from reporters, proactively pitch reporters, and assist with placement of op-eds
• Draft and edit press releases, op-eds, and related content
• Facilitate media opportunities on behalf of Equitable Growth's network of academics and in-house experts, ensuring all are sufficiently prepped for all public appearances
• Oversee monitoring and tracking of press coverage of Equitable Growth and related subjects
• Create and maintain targeted media lists
• Cultivate and maintain strategic relationships with reporters, producers, and editors
• Support implementation of Equitable Growth's digital media strategy and maintain message consistency across online platforms
• Use social media channels to communicate organizational messages and live-tweet events
• Create and maintain departmental content calendar and identify opportunities for researchers and policy staff to take advantage of timely opportunities
• Support the planning and execution of research convenings and public events as part of the Communications team
• Develop and monitor adherence to media relations metrics and track progress toward quarterly and annual outcomes
• Work with the Communications team to develop messaging and implement a strategic communications plan, and to update the plan and associated activities over time
• Approach media relations through a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens
 
Requirements and Qualifications:
• Minimum of 3 years' media relations and/or strategic communications experience
• Bachelor's degree required; major in communications, journalism, economics, or related discipline a plus
• Experience in economics, public policy, or research-driven organization preferred
• Knowledge of economic policy landscape a plus
• Existing relationships with reporters, especially those covering economics, a plus
• Excellent writing skills, including the ability to distill complex research for press audience
• Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills
• Ability to work on a number of projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines
• Team player with excellent interpersonal skills
• Proficiency with Salesforce or similar data management system preferred; proficiency with basic computer applications (Office Suite and Google Docs) required; willingness and ability to learn additional software as needed
 
The salary floor for this unionized position is $57,200 with additional compensation commensurate with experience. Apply here
