The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) is seeking a Communications & Development Coordinator to advance our policy and grassroots work through strategic communications efforts and expanded development capacity. If you're a systems thinker, amazing communicator, and enthusiastic collaborator who is passionate about putting your skills to work toward building a more just, sustainable farm and food future, and tackling major issues like climate change, this is the job for you. In this role, you'll help tell our story to current and potential funders, the media, and the public and help steward deeper relationships across our community. 

This is a full-time, exempt position that offers benefits and is based in our Washington, DC office. All staff are currently remote due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We strongly prefer that candidates be able to work regularly from our Washington, DC office when public health and safety guidelines allow for office reopening. This position reports to NSAC's Coalition Director. This role is suitable for professionals with several years of experience to mid-career level, with strong opportunity for growth and development, and we encourage all interested candidates to apply even if they do not meet all of the qualifications.


THE ORGANIZATION

NSAC is an alliance of grassroots organizations that advocates for federal policy reform to advance the sustainability of agriculture, food systems, natural resources, and rural communities. For over 30 years, NSAC's stellar track record of policy accomplishments has been guided by a vision of agriculture where a safe, nutritious, ample, and affordable food supply is produced by a legion of family farmers who make a decent living for their work, while protecting the environment, and contributing to the strength and stability of their communities. Racial justice – an understanding and acknowledgment of historical and ongoing racial inequities and commitment to actions challenging those inequities – is a core NSAC tenet that we seek to embed in our structure, analysis, policy development, and advocacy. 


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES  

Development – Collaborate with the Coalition Director to develop and execute successful organizational fundraising efforts:

  • Draft, edit, and compile grant application and reporting materials

  • Manage grant deadlines calendar, coordinating with staff to submit timely proposals and reports

  • Manage online giving, including creating individual donor materials and coordinating individual donor fundraising campaigns 

  • Prepare and manage accurate and timely entry and tracking of all donor and funder data, correspondence, contacts and deadlines

  • Build and maintain funder prospect lists, including prospecting to support the coalition's racial equity efforts, and help cultivate relationships with funders

  • Contribute to the organization's annual planning, budgeting, and fundraising processes

Strategic Communications – Work with staff to develop and implement effective ongoing media outreach efforts, with an emphasis on translating complex policy issues for lay audiences and on lifting up grassroots voices in sustainable agriculture, including narratives that center BIPOC farmers and communities:

  • Collaborate with staff to develop and disseminate press releases, comments, and press templates and materials for coalition members

  • Cultivate media contacts and relationships both local and national, including maintaining NSAC's press list and responding to media queries

  • Assist NSAC staff with the NSAC blog, including editing posts and writing original content

  • Secure strategic piece placement in print, broadcast, blogs and other online sources

  • Track press coverage and monitor NSAC's communications reach

  • Assist in managing and developing content for NSAC's social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter)

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Understanding of and passion for sustainable agriculture and food systems, and willingness to build issue knowledge where needed  

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking

  • Applied experience in fundraising and development (including grantwriting), communications (developing content and strategies for print, radio, and/or online media), and/or marketing, in a non-profit, policy or social good oriented company

  • Demonstrated commitment to racial equity, and an understanding of how effective communications can advance justice

  • Willingness to travel domestically several times a year  (no travel required while operating under COVID-19 safety precautions)

  • Proficient with EveryAction CRM (or similar CRMs), Google Suite, Microsoft Office, Adobe CreativeSuite, Wordpress, social media platforms, and Google Analytics 

  • Exceptional initiative and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work independently and collaboratively, listen well, build trust, and model healthy conflict resolution

  • Strong project management skills and demonstrated ability to work on multiple timelines, including a a demanding congressional schedule and administrative deadlines

  • Ability to work effectively with, value differences of, and incorporate the experiences and policy impacts on, diverse groups of individuals, including race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ability, and socioeconomic circumstances

  • Enthusiasm for and experience in cultivating lasting relationships and accountable partnerships with a diverse body of stakeholders and decision makers 

 

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCES

The following skills are not required, but are desired.

  • A working knowledge of the federal policy-making process

  • Graphic design proficiency, including Canva and/or Adobe CS

  • Experience in strategic communications for grassroots advocacy and/or policy campaigns

  • Fluency in a language other than English

  • Understanding of intersectionality, particularly in writing and reaching audiences

 

SALARY AND BENEFITS

NSAC offers a competitive non-profit salary dependent on qualifications and experience: $60,000-$70,000. For exceptionally qualified candidates, we are open to a higher level of responsibility and a corresponding increase in salary.
