City Bureau is seeking a journalist or writer/researcher with a passion for local government, policy and power in Chicago to support our team as our Civic Producer. In this full time role you will work closely with Chicago Documenters and program staff to fact-check and approve community reporting on local government meetings and produce a curated, high-quality daily newsletter.

RESPONSIBILITIES
As City Bureau's Civic Producer you will:
Review, fact-check and approve Documenters content daily and on deadline
Provide written and verbal feedback to Documenters
Produce a daily newsletter based on approved Documenters content
Consult with/support City Bureau reporters on editorial coverage about local government and civic power
Support City Bureau events, including Documenters workshops
Understanding of and commitment to City Bureau's core values, mission and vision
Strong journalistic writing skills, with an ability to identify and appeal to diverse stakeholders
Excellent fact-checking and copy-editing skills, with a strong detail-orientation
Basic knowledge of local policy-making and the ways that people can get involved in local government
Ability to quickly learn about complex issues and prioritize information accordingly
Excellent time-management skills and an ability to work on deadline
Impeccable organizational skills and an ability to move projects forward independently
$42,500 salary; City Bureau uses a fixed compensation structure that includes planned annual raises
Benefits package including health care, dental, vision, life insurance
Professional development stipend, work tools stipend
15 days paid vacation in addition to 8 paid company holidays and 7 health days
Flexible work schedule - some night/weekend hours may be required
Fully remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic, with flexible work-from-home options post-pandemic

With local media in crisis in Chicago and across the country, City Bureau has been at the forefront of a movement to reimagine journalism as a public good. Our programs inform, engage and equip people to strengthen local information systems, starting with communities of color on the South and West Sides of Chicago. Since we launched in 2015 we've trained more than 100 reporting fellows in community-based reporting; hosted more than 200 free public workshops, trainings and discussions; and trained more than 700 Documenters who have collectively logged more than 7,000 hours attending public meetings.
