Arizona Center for Empowerment (ACE), and its sister organization, Living United for Change in Arizona (LUCHA), are progressive, grassroots, community-based organizations engaged in and committed to building power throughout communities in Arizona. At ACE, we work to ensure that everyone has access to the American Dream by amplifying the voices of low- and moderate-income communities, communities of color, and immigrant communities through collective action.
ACE & LUCHA seeks a talented, visionary, and accomplished strategist to assume a leadership role on our Democracy team. We work to hold government and corporations accountable, improve the health of our families, economy and environment, and reform our public schools, workplaces and financial institutions..
We are looking for an energetic, creative and driven issue advocate/director to help develop, support and implement state, local and federal policy campaigns and strategies on our key democracy priorities, including voting rights, redistricting, money in politics and other democracy- expanding reforms in Arizona.
Candidates must be passionate about expanding access to democracy and increasing political participation in the Latinx community and some background working on democracy and civil rights issues is strongly preferred. This position is an exciting opportunity to help grow and coordinate ACE/LUCHA's democracy campaign work as part of our organizational priorities and our leadership in the AZ Democracy Collaborative.
Primary Responsibilities
The Democracy Director will:
Execute annual work plans to achieve organizational and campaign objectives
Serve on ACE/LUCHA's senior management team. Participate in setting organizational policies, establishing strategic priorities, advancing organizational vision & plans, etc
Effectively supervise and mentor a small team of Democracy/co-governance staff. Develop work plans, facilitate ongoing check-ins and planning meetings, conduct annual performance reviews, manage the hiring process for any new hires, ensure adherence to organizational policies and values, and develop monthly Democracy reports.
Work with ACE/LUCHA leadership and allies to develop and execute strategies to advance democracy reform policy priorities at the state, local and federal level;
Facilitate and manage the creation of a Co-Governance program that moves policy, promotes leadership development, and creates a co-governance model with ACE members and elected officials.
Work within ACE/LUCHA to develop and implement member-engagement and organizing strategies around democracy priorities;
Serve as the primary ACE/LUCHA contact on democracy work, coordinating and executing ACE/LUCHA 's work as part of its role in the AZ Democracy Collaborative; Voting Rights coalition and others.
Develop policy expertise and help develop grassroots member engagement tools around automatic voter registration, public financing systems, redistricting and other proactive reforms;
Work with ACE/LUCHA leadership to develop education and training that grows the grassroots policy knowledge and leadership of ACE/LUCHA core leaders on key democracy reforms;
Provide strategic and technical campaign support including field, communications, policy and legislative strategy to meet the campaign goals and priorities of active democracy campaigns; and
Work to expand & engage the participation and leadership of ACE/LUCHA's membership and communities of color in state and local advocacy efforts to advance proactive democracy reforms.
Qualifications
We are seeking candidates with excellent relationship-building skills, who are outcomes-driven, with strong and diverse issue advocacy skills. Ideal candidates should have demonstrated experience in the following:
A commitment to social and racial justice issues and understanding of challenges facing immigrant communities, communities of color, and low-and moderate income families;
The ability to be substantially self-directed and drive work forward following consultations on broad strategic objectives.
A demonstrated commitment to meeting a high bar and a history of getting things done even in the face of obstacles
Strong supervisory skills with experience effectively managing and mentoring others.
Minimum of 4 years of strategic issue advocacy experience including policy campaigns, state-level issue advocacy and/or lobbying and legislative advocacy;
Familiarity around voting rights, money in politics and/or democracy reform issues and policy;
A track record of developing and maintaining strong working relationships with and among a diverse group of stakeholders. Including experience working with diverse coalitions to advocate for policy change;
Experience implementing issue campaign plans that include policy, lobbying, grassroots mobilization, field, communications and policy implementation strategies;
Understanding of issues facing low-wage workers, immigrant communities, and other communities of color;
Understanding of the Arizona Legislative process;
Familiarity with political data, latest technologies, and best practices;
Experience building broad-based coalitions and working with grassroots organizations;
Comfort with the implementation of a range of organizing strategies and tactics;
Excellent communication skills;
Excellent organizational skills, with a results-focused approach;
Ability to work well with diverse groups and populations;
Dedication and ability to work flexible hours;
Spanish/English bilingual preferred but not required.
