Organization/Organization Description 

The Arizona Democratic Party provides the highest level of service to elect our candidates and support our campaigns, constituents and state.

Job Title: Executive Director

Position/Role:  The Executive Director  (ED) is the most senior staff person in ADP and is the primary liaison to the Chair.  The ED convenes and runs the leadership team meetings with input from the Chair. The Executive Director shares responsibility for creating strategy and managing execution with the Chair.   

The Executive Director oversees the financial health of the party by managing the Finance Director and contractors responsible for fundraising, accounting and compliance, and collaborates closely with the Treasurer.  The Executive Director is the final decision maker on significant expenditures and staff configuration in service of accomplishing ADP's strategy and realizing its vision.  S/he leads relationships statewide campaigns and national organizations operating in AZ to ensure strategic alignment. 

The Executive Director reports to the ADP Chair. 

Essential Job Functions: 

Strategy:

  • Stay apprised of internal and external political, legal, HR, and financial situations that may support or disrupt ADP's strategy.

  • Provide regular feedback to the Chair, the Executive Board and Executive Committee regarding organizational execution of the strategy and contextual challenges and opportunities.

  • Ensure all staff understand the strategy, have the opportunity to ask questions, and provide regular feedback.

  • Ensure that resource allocation matches the strategic priorities of the organization acting as an approver of job descriptions, expenses, and budget reallocations of all departmental budgets. 

  • Effectively and accurately represent ADP's strategy and execution at internal party meetings and external meetings with allies.

Management/Leadership:

  • Align direct report's job descriptions and work priorities with the organizational strategy.

  • Ensure and provide clear communications to ADP Chair regarding internal and external political, legal, HR, and financial situations that may support or disrupt ADP's strategy.

  • Manage staff performance, providing clear expectations, development support, motivation and accountability.

  • Routinely assess direct reports' skill and performance and provide feedback to develop their individual skills to benefit the performance of the team.

  • Routinely assess departmental progress on objectives and targets.

  • Routinely review the quality, timeliness, and presentation of departmental plans and large projects.

  • Ensure all staff have access to the information they need to perform and effectively represent the organization.

Financial Management:

  • Guide the creation of ADP's budget, establish a budget philosophy, and align the budget with the organization's strategy.

  • Ensure that departmental budgets and resource allocations match the strategic priorities of the organization acting as an approver of expenses and budget reallocations. 

  • Provide reports to the Chair, Executive Board and Executive Committee on Actual to Budget Calculations and status of ADP's financial condition. 

  •  Establish guidelines for budget and forecast preparation.

  •  Create guidelines and ensure appropriate systems for Directors to manage budgets and approve expenses. 

  • Review and present actual spending against budget by department and agreed strategic objectives to the Executive Board and Executive Committee.

  • Routinely review the quality of the budget and finance plan.

  • Serve as a fundraising principal for ADP.

  • Cultivate and provide prospects to the finance department from representation activities.

 Political & Communications

  • Stay current on political developments in Arizona and best practices for state party development nationally. 

  • Effectively develop and manage state political relationships and engage stakeholders to ensure that the party is maximizing its value and earning the support and investment of the party's elected leaders, volunteers and donors.

  • Routinely review progress to goal on significant political investments. 

  • Provide regular strategic guidance and feedback on the expected and actual outcomes of political relationships partners and allies.

  • Shape partner and ally political strategy through outreach. 

  • Resolve unresolvable political disagreements within the coordinated campaign and other stakeholders.

  • Approve party messaging.

  • Serve as an on the record spokesperson.

Qualifications Required: 

In order to effectively engage in representative work and direct the implementation of ADP programs, policies, and goals, the ideal candidate is required to have the following:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Administration, Finance, Public Policy, Management, Organizational Development, Industrial/Labor Relations or a related field. A Master's Degree is preferred.

  • A minimum of at least five (5) years of political experience.  This should include experience in planning, running and winning campaigns. 

  • A minimum of at least two full cycles four (4) years successful leadership experience in major statewide races or state-based organizations. 

  • Significant staff and crisis management experience with proven, clear decision making ability.

  • Demonstrated success in fundraising, financial reporting and budgetary expertise.

  • Professional commitment to advocating for diversity and inclusiveness.

  • Extensive experience in strategic planning, community organizing, and/or coalition building.

  • Experience successfully working with governance boards, committees, or councils; knowledge of and experience with parliamentary procedure is highly desired.

 Other Skills: 

  • Deep knowledge of Arizona's politics, constituencies, donors, and the structure and workings of the Democratic Party, national Democratic campaign committees, allied action committees, and movement groups

We offer competitive salaries plus 100% employer paid benefits, Paid-Time-Off, Employee Discounts and more! Pay ranges from $95,000 - $105,000 annually, depending on experience and relative qualifications.
