[GAINPOWER.org: Jobs That Are Left] Why We Honor Talent

We hope you enjoyed your long weekend and spent some time reflecting on the legacy of the extraordinary Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I spent some time this week listening to and re-reading his Where Do We Go From Here speech because so much about it has inspired our work - including our name and the Powerful IDEA Awards which we launched last week.

When I was launching GAIN Power a few years ago - it was much more than a rebrand of Democratic GAIN. It is a total re-imagination of how to support the people who work in progressive politics. The name idea hit me one day when I was thinking about why we work in politics. I was very upset about how power is used to hurt people - and yet power is what everyone is trying to gain. And, I was a bit worried about the negative connotation of the word power so I went on a search for it's best meaning. That is when I stumbled upon MLK's quotes about power and read the full speech where he spoke it. These are the words that resonated.

I fell in love with this definition and have embraced it deeply since. So much so, that I've now launched two companies with the word power in them - GAIN Power and Amplify Power.

Our community is full of people dedicated to social, political, and economic change through Impacting on Democracy, Elections, and Advocacy. That is what IDEA stands for and is the meaning of our Powerful IDEA Awards. We believe that people should be recognized for this work and the work itself should be too.

The Powerful IDEA Awards are an opportunity to celebrate those who embrace & follow MLK's teaching. Those who choose love to implement the demands of justice and achieve power and change.

If you're reading this email you embody the Powerful IDEA. We want to showcase your work in our community. Let us know how you made a Powerful impact on the midterms by submitting your nominations or share your love by nominating someone you know who deserves recognition.

I'm grateful for the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the many other civil rights leaders whose work continues to inspire us today to build power and achieve purpose for those who need it most.
