Communications Coordinator/Writer



 In the Public Interest, a non-profit resource center on government outsourcing and responsible contracting, seeks a talented Communications Coordinator/Writer to help draft a variety of written materials across a wide range of issues and work with Executive Director to craft and implement an effective communications strategy.   The person in this position should be creative and curious, willing to learn about the subject matter and think laterally about how to explain the topics at hand for a range of audiences. Responsibilities will consist primarily of drafting a range of written materials, ranging from op-eds to fact sheets, press releases to newsletter emails. The Communications Coordinator/Writer will also help edit and sharpen other products such as reports, testimony and campaign materials. The Communications Coordinator/ Writer will work closely with the Executive Director, Research and Policy Director, and the Campaigns Director to craft materials that convey clear policy analysis in an accessible way for a multiple audiences.  Applicants must have a basic understanding of issues related to privatization.  Media relations experience is also a bonus. The right candidate will have the following qualities and skills:

  • 3 - 5 years' experience as an effective communicator of policy and advocacy concepts.
  • Ability to adapt narrative voice for multiple surrogates and spokespeople to a variety of audiences, including trade and local press.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills: S/he demonstrates the ability to write clearly, concisely and effectively; also a strong editor and proofreader.
  • Outstanding organizational skills: S/he is highly organized, with the ability to multi-task, capture important details and prioritize work.
  • Ability to be a teamplayer, share information, ask for help, support colleagues, provide and accept feedback in a positive way.
  • Commitment to the mission and values embodied by ITPI including to the public provision of governmental services and an appreciation for the role labor unions play in protecting workers.
  • Social media skills are a plus but not required
