Deputy Director

SEIU 775, the long-term care workers union, represents more than 42,000 home care and nursing home workers in Washington State and Montana. Summary: Deputy Director, equivalent to an assistant field director/internal organizing director in most SEIU locals, is a senior management position responsible as second in command for all of the union's member strength programs and relationships, including member participation in union events and activities, member leadership development, member mobilization, political fundraising, collective bargaining negotiations, contract enforcement, joint labor-management partnerships, member communications and member services. Position works with young, fast-growing, innovative, bold and progressive union that has grown from 1700 to 44,000 members in the long-term care industry in the space of 12 years. 

The Deputy Director works with the department Director and other Deputy Directors to manage the internal operations of the department, developing strategies and leading planning and implementation of organizational priorities.  In addition to directing the work of teams internal to the department, the Deputy Director coordinates with the leadership of the union to effectively execute organization-wide priorities and strategies. Occasionally the Deputy Director will coordinate with coalition partners external to the organization to achieve coalition goals.




The Member Programs and Participation Department consists of five work teams, including teams (each with its own manager) for:  leadership development program, collective bargaining/employer relations team, field canvass, member communications team, and data systems team. The Department is innovating new ways to build the strength and effectiveness of the union through member leadership and activism.  Requirements of this position include:

  • Several years of experience working in the labor movement, preferably within SEIU.
  • Experience supervising union organizers and/or representatives.
  • Experience managing managers and coordinating the work of multiple teams and organizational priorities
  • Demonstrated success at teambuilding, coaching, and staff supervision.
  • Experience developing and directing successful field and communications campaigns
  • Experience directing successful contract campaigns.
  • Experience directing efforts to mobilize union members for political and legislative campaigns.
  • Experience in designing and implementing leadership development programs for union members. Experience directing at least two of the following types of campaigns or projects is preferred:
    • NLRB-style certification campaigns
    • Electoral campaigns (such as a state legislative or Congressional campaign),
    • Fundraising or membership canvassing (such as ACORN, PIRG, Citizen Action, etc.)
    • Internal membership programs and/or campaigns
    • Experience directing or implementing communications programs and strategies.
      • A commitment to building a 21st-Century union movement, to risk-taking, and to the mission, vision, and values of SEIU.
Preferences: Women and people of color strongly encouraged to apply. Fluency in a second language is plus. Experience working with a labor union, progressive non-profit, community organization, advocacy group, political campaign or elected official is a plus. Demonstrated commitment to creating positive worker/employer relationships while fighting to raise standards for all workers in the industry is also a plus.

Compensation: Salary range is $72,000 to $84,000 annually, depending on experience. Benefits include fully employer-paid family benefits (includes domestic partner) for health, dental, pharmacy and vision coverage, fully employer-paid defined benefit pension (SEIU), disability and life insurance, a generous leave package, car and cell phone allowances, an optional 401(K) plan, and other benefits outlined in the policies of SEIU 775.
