America Votes works across the country with over 400 state and national partner organizations to advance progressive policies, expand access to the ballot, coordinate issue advocacy and election campaigns, and protect every American's right to vote. America Votes has built a permanent advocacy and campaign infrastructure that provides strategic coordination, data and targeting services to progressive organizations.  Groups that are part of America Votes work on a broad range of issues including environmental protection, education, human and civil rights, women's rights, reproductive choice and labor.  America Votes' strong progressive infrastructure supports our coalition partners' advocacy efforts and coordinated voter outreach.

 

Position Description

The Minnesota State Director is primarily responsible for working with and leading state, national and locally based America Votes partner organizations to develop and execute a strategically coordinated state plans that maximizes the priorities, resources and effectiveness of all partners, and reduces duplication of efforts in the areas of voter outreach, education, advocacy and turnout.  The Minnesota State Director will ensure short-term programs and elections advance the shared long-term vision for progressive change in Minnesota and will be expected to act with appropriate discretion and respect for confidentiality requirements.

 

The Minnesota State Director will work with existing Minnesota-based organizations and coalitions to identify shared goals and create non-duplicative work plans with a goal of having America Votes fit seamlessly into the existing network of progressive organizations, coalitions and meetings.  Likewise, the State Director will assess the readiness of emerging advocacy organizations to join the table, will mentor them and help them integrate their programs within the statewide plans.

 

The State Director will report to the National Field Director of America Votes.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Work with America Votes partner organizations to design overall statewide voter education and outreach plans based on achieving long-term priorities developed by in-state partner organizations and stakeholders. Evaluate partner program outcomes and monitor progress toward goals.  Report out to table and stakeholders.

 

2. Plan and facilitate regular meetings of America Votes partner organizations to create, negotiate and share plans, and progress towards state goals, as well as to identify problems and new opportunities; adjust plans accordingly.

 

3.  Work with America Votes national Development team to identify in-state funding opportunities and programs. 

 

4. Manage state staff.

 

5. Work directly with America Votes national staff and national partners to ensure smooth communication and program integration with state operations.

 

6. Assist local organizations in identifying resources.

 

7. Provide, or provide for, technical assistance to increase capacity and impact in grassroots advocacy, education and mobilization efforts.

 

8. Work with local groups to facilitate execution of jointly agreed upon state plans, and identify areas that may need additional assistance.  Provide technical assistance or refer for assistance as appropriate.

 

9.  Additional duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 6 years of campaign or non-profit management experience or 8-10 solid years of experience in political or non-profit advocacy, plus knowledge of and strong commitment to progressive causes.  Applicants ideally have a mix of both electoral or advocacy campaign experience and organizing skills.  Applicants must have demonstrated ability to negotiate, build consensus and strategically disagree.  Must be respected by stakeholders and be trusted to lead. Must be able to create shared space between all partners, regardless of budget size or political power.  Applicants must be a self-starter; be willing to work long and irregular hours and to travel as needed. Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).  Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.  Strong inter-personal skills and ability to work in a team environment.  Ability to prioritize and handle variety of projects simultaneously.  Candidates with field program management, staff management, basic data and targeting understanding, and an understanding of the legislative process preferred.

 

Compensation

Salary is commensurate with experience. Benefits include health, dental, vision and 401K.
