The Committee of Interns & Residents, the largest resident physicians' union in the
country, is looking for a Controller.
 
About Us:
 
CIR is a nationwide, progressive, member-driven healthcare union representing 13,000 resident physicians. We advocate for the workplace rights of doctors-in-training and improve the delivery of quality health care.
 
Job Description:
 
The Controller directs the overall financial plans and accounting practices of the
organization. The Controller is responsible for all financial matters of the organization
including accounting, monthly financial reporting, financial analysis, budgets, cash
receipts and disbursements, payroll and benefits administration, cost accounting, risk
management and insurance, banking relationships, financing, tax compliance, audits,
member dues collections and day to day accounting activities.
 
The Controller reports directly to the Associate Director and will be an integral member of the senior leadership team. The Controller must possess strong leadership and communication skills combined with a proven hands-on-approach to management. This position offers an excellent compensation package commensurate with experience.
 
Responsibilities:
 
  • Supervise and train accounting staff and assist in the day-to-day management of the accounting department;
  • Overall responsibility of member dues collections, responsibility for communication with member hospitals regarding financial matters;
  • Maintain the integrity of financial information and assuring its effective communication to the appropriate parties;
  • Prepare annual budget, including direct interface with senior staff, in order to prepare budget as requested;
  •  Train non-fiscal staff in financial management and in interpreting monthly financial reports;
  • Undertake analytical analysis of current cost allocation in order to maximize funds;
  • Handle and maintain monthly analysis of general ledger accounts as required;
  •  Enhance and/or develop, implement and enforce internal controls, policies and procedures of the organization by way of systems that will improve the overall operation and effectiveness of the organization;
  • Ensure that the appropriate Accounting and Financial policies are followed;
  • Prepare all financial statements for Union and related health benefit funds;
  •  Provide technical financial advice and knowledge to others within the financial discipline;
  • Provide strategic financial recommendations and leadership on issues affecting the organization;
  • Oversee the annual financial audits;
  • Perform additional duties as requested by management. 
 



Qualifications:
 
  •  Bachelor's degree in Accounting and advanced degree preferred.
  • Must have 6 years of hands-on nonprofit accounting experience.
  •  Comprehensive knowledge of GAAP.
  •  Comprehensive knowledge of Peachtree and Quickbooks Accounting software;
  •  Excellent verbal and written communication; strong interpersonal skills and ability to work closely within a team;
  •  Expertise in budgeting and reporting;
  •  Excellent organizational skills; ability to multi-task; attention to detail; strong follow through skills;
  •  Be a strongly self-motivated individual who will rise to the challenge and provide the hard work necessary to succeed;
  •  Be ethical and have an unquestioned level of personal and professional integrity;
  •  Very team oriented with the flexibility and adaptability to be able to change direction instantly to meet the dynamic needs of the Organization;
  •  Passion for results;
  •  Ability to perform in a fast paced, dynamic and growing environment;
  •  Ability to manage and develop staff;
  •  Ability to be flexible and adjust to work schedule;
  •  Proficient knowledge of Excel;
  •  Strong knowledge of accounting software programs;
  • A well-organized and self-directed individual who is a team player;
  •  An individual who can relate to people at all levels of an organization and possesses excellent communication skills;
