Reporting to the Director of Communications and Marketing, the Digital Communications Specialist is responsible for growing the reach of the Institute and its online and digital content, particularly across social media channels. The candidate must have demonstrated experience creating and implementing distribution tactics that maximize the impact of digital assets; very strong writing skills, in particular for the web and social channels; ability to shoot and edit short-form video; experience managing an editorial calendar to optimize promotional efforts; strong interest in analytics to measure effectiveness; and significant background managing social media and digital tools and platforms to tell compelling stories that advance marketing, communications and engagement strategies. Importantly, the ideal candidate will also possess foundational skills and experience in traditional communications, marketing and media relations; imagination; and a true passion for social media and creation of exceptional digital content furthering an organization's reach and impact.
Responsibilities will include:
Managing the IOP's social channels – Twitter, Facebook, Google + and Instagram – including by: sharing blog posts, videos, photos or news mentions and other digital content as they are produced; promoting upcoming Institute events; and live-tweeting selected high-profile JFK Jr. Forum and other IOP events;
Developing and implementing a comprehensive digital distribution strategy – identifying opportunities on social channels for contribution and engagement – targeting influencers and audiences to help maximize visibility and reach of IOP video interviews, John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum archive videos, blog posts and other digital content;
Creating/collecting all original written content for the IOP blog from students, staff, Fellows and prominent IOP guests, and maintaining responsibility for all back-end content population, photo-sizing, layout and design through the IOP website's content management system;
Developing, creating and editing original multi-media video content - particularly "3 with IOP" short-form video interviews with IOP guests – that help leverage IOP speakers and programming and the importance of politics and public service careers;
Creating and managing an editorial calendar outlining weekly strategic promotion of online content – including feature articles, student-authored pieces, recent photos, videos and other and multimedia materials – and IOP events and programming highlighting new IOP initiatives;
Promoting microsite for the JFK Jr. Forum – Harvard's premier arena for political discussion and debate – and facilitating sharing of its video archive content throughout social communities and online political discourse;
Utilizing analytics and other measurement tools to assess the impact of the IOP's social properties and new media on overall marketing strategy, including by: weekly impact measurement of IOP social media content, etc., reporting the results to IOP staff as needed, and compiling such information in a monthly analytics report distributed to IOP leadership;
Originating and frequently refreshing vibrant feature web content for IOP homepage, leveraging multimedia assets.
Working collaboratively with students and staff to ensure efficient content procurement, providing technological assistance and training to staff and students where needed.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and minimum of 3 years of directly related experience. Demonstrated experience implementing comprehensive social media and digital distribution strategies across social platforms/channels. Must have experience in traditional communications writing, e.g., authoring press releases, media advisories, etc. Must also be skilled in writing for the web and social media and have experience with web-based multimedia technologies and all aspects of web video and audio production including filming, editing and preparation for multi-channel web distribution.
Additional Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Multimedia/ Visual Communications, Communications, New Media, Marketing or related field preferred. 5+ years of related work experience preferred.
Deep interest in online and social content strategy and relevant analytics. Interest in politics and public service strongly preferred; experience with Final Cut Pro video editing software a strong plus. Strong analytical, technical and project management skills; creative thinker, action-oriented, versatile, ability to adapt in dynamic environment and takes initiative; excellent organizational abilities, strong editorial judgment, extremely detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task, meet deadlines and work under pressure; strong professional and interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively; must be able to work on multiple projects and complete high-quality work against strict and sometimes conflicting deadlines; team player with a positive, collegial attitude and a high level of professionalism; keen sense of humor essential.
