Program Associate - Democracy Is For People Campaign
Public Citizen @ Dupont Circle
Our democracy is under attack with Big Money dominating our elections like never before. The U.S. Supreme Court's Citizens United and McCutcheon rulings are allowing billionaires and Big Business to dominate politics.
Public Citizen's Democracy Is For People (DIFP) campaign is working to pass a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United and related cases that make it impossible to place limits on outside spending in elections.
We have made incredible progress. Sixteen states and 600 cities and counties have called for an amendment. We've gained the support of President Obama, and a majority of the U.S. Senate voted last year for an amendment.
We are expanding our campaign and are looking for someone who can help us make these successes known and help raise the profile of the movement as a whole through our online and media outreach. The Program Associate will work closely with the two DIFP Campaign Directors, in collaboration with our Online Advocacy and Fundraising team and the Communications department, to develop and execute an overall online and media strategy for the campaign including email, social media, traditional media, website and materials development. Write and upload email alerts and develop action pages to engage members to take action and score strategic wins. Help coordinate strategic efforts to grow the Democracy Is For People email list and deepen the engagement of activists in the campaign.
2. Proactive Media Relations: Work with the DIFP team and Communications department to develop media strategies and national/state press contact lists; assist with the drafting of press materials (press releases, op-eds, letters to the editor, blog posts); and engage media through opportunities created by the campaign (such as rallies and press conferences) and opportunities presented by outside events (rapid response).
3. Website Content: Update and develop content for DemocracyIsForPeople.org, the CitizenVox blog, and coalition websites. Skills in video production, editing, and/or graphic design or HTML a plus.
4. List Management: Analyze performance of online outreach to refine segmentation of email list and targeting of alerts; in consultation with Development staff, pull lists of activists for targeted organizing (by phone etc.); upload offline petition signers.
5. Social Media: Develop and execute social media plan including Twitter and Facebook for the campaign in collaboration with Democracy Is For People Campaign Directors.
6. Materials: Work with DIFP team and the Communications department to write and copy edit fact sheets and other background documents, coordinating with the Communications department on projects that involve graphic designers, printers and other contractors.
