The Deputy Director of Partnership Campaigns  will develop and build relationships with partner organizations that expand the capacity of 32BJ's organizing program, help win progressive legislative and policy campaigns, support low wage worker campaigns and build capacity of 32BJ and key partner organizations.  Working with and at the direction of the Director, the Deputy Director will work with the staff of 32BJ departments and geographic districts to facilitate the development and execution of campaign based work with local, regional and national partner organizations which mobilizes communities and wins changes impacting the lives of our members and low and moderate income peoples.  They will supervise and direct a small staff and coordinate their work with other departments.  The Deputy Director will also represent 32BJ at coalition meetings and events.  This position will be available June 1st, 2015.

 

SEIU 32BJ represents 145,000 property service workers in 12 east coast states and the District of Columbia.  The position is based at the New York City headquarters, but the deputy will be expected to work with and travel to 32BJ and partner organization locations throughout 32BJ's geography.  32BJ has an aggressive organizing program aimed at raising standards for security officers, airport workers, cleaners, residential maintenance workers and institutional food service workers.  32BJ also has active political, legislative and electoral campaigns to support organizing, raise standards for low wage workers, win commonsense immigration reform and promote other social and economic justice policy initiatives.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and oversee execution of partnership campaign work in specific areas based on joint planning with political, organizing and District staff.   This includes developing and deepening organizational  relationships and, based on those relationships, mobilizing support for both specific Local 32BJ organizing and political campaigns and for coalition campaigns aimed at improving the lives of low and moderate income people.
  • Supervise, train and develop accountability to work plans for staff assigned to partnership campaigns.
  • Provide tactical support on partnership campaign development and implementation, including mobilization events.
  • Identify opportunities for strategic partnership activity to support the member capacity-building, contract and organizing campaigns of the Union.
  • Represent 32BJ as needed with internal and coalition partners.

Qualifications:                                                                         

  • Ten years' experience in community and labor organizing and/or campaign work 
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Effective judgment in handling relationships with other organizations and their leadership
  • Two years' experience successfully managing staff in a team setting
  • Familiarity with electronic database use in analysis and planning of work
  • Ability to develop and hold organizational relationships with 32BJ members and non-members
  • Excellent communications skills and the ability to build strong working relationships with stakeholders across the Union 
  • Ability to travel frequently to work directly with staff and members in each area.
  • Ability to speak English, Spanish and Portuguese preferred.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends.
