Vice President, Training Services

The Management Center (TMC) is looking for a dynamic presenter who loves thinking and talking about management to join our growing training team. We have more demand for our training services than we can handle, and a high bar for how we will meet that demand: we need someone who can deliver our existing curriculum and answer questions so effectively that participants are left delighted with their experience and eager for more. We also need someone who is aligned with our views of management – namely, that at the end of the day great managers do what it takes to deliver and sustain results, and that they do that by blending shared ownership and engagement with rigor and accountability.

About TMC

The mission of The Management Center is to help social change leaders learn how to build and run more effective organizations so they can deliver great results. We do that by providing direct assistance and coaching to client organizations, and by offering publications and training to the broader field. Founded in 2006, we have helped shape the practices of over 100 leading organizations and thousands of individual managers, focusing in particular on progressive organizations working for social change. We look to our training program to broaden our impact within and beyond client organizations, to continue building our reputation, and to provide revenue to help sustain the organization.

Responsibilities

The VP, Training Services will help expand our reach and impact by:

  • Delivering our existing training program to groups of managers around the country, via a mix of one-day, two-day, and half-day in-person trainings and webinars that we offer both publicly and for client organizations
  • Engaging with potential clients who approach us to design training packages that meet their needs, and occasionally reaching out to possible new training partners
  • Helping us revise our curriculum and design other products as we grow
  • Our training curriculum focuses on the elements of effective management, including delegating effectively, setting goals and measuring progress against them, hiring great people, giving feedback and developing staff members, addressing performance problems, and ensuring your team gets great results. Our trainings are interactive, fast-paced, and – ideally – engaging and funny, not dry and stiff.

The primary gauge of your success will be the extent to which you generate the 3 R's: Raves; Requests (for more work); and Referrals (to others).

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will bring:

  • Experience managing a high-performing team or organization
  • An ability to present material in a funny, engaging, energetic manner to a range of external audiences while seeming like a real person
  • The smarts to think on your feet and give good answers to participant questions

Prior experience as a trainer is definitely not a requirement, but you'll need to be able to present material engagingly and interact well with an audience. We're also seeking a great manager who knows first-hand what it takes to get things done and who can convey that knowledge to others. Candidates do need to fit well with our culture, bringing a strong commitment to excellence and a cutting-edge sense of humor.

What Else You Should Know

The position involves heavy travel (about 1-2 nights on the road per week if full-time). The position is ideally based on the Washington, D.C. area, although we'll consider other arrangements for the ideal candidate. Salary for this position will depend on experience and be highly competitive. The Management Center is an equal opportunity employer, and we make a particular effort to recruit people of color to apply for open positions.
