Organizational Description:
The mission of RHTP is to change the political and commercial climate in the United States so that people have access to the technologies they need to become pregnant when they are ready, prevent or end a pregnancy when they are not and promote their health and wellbeing throughout their reproductive lives. Our current program areas are abortion technologies, contraceptive technologies, health and wellness (with a focus on the intersections between environmental and reproductive health) and assisted reproductive technologies.
RHTP is an advocacy organization; we do not provide direct services. We convene multidisciplinary discussions that consider the science, ethics, policies and politics of any given technology; try to build consensus for action among stakeholders, including professional medical groups, researchers, advocacy organizations, academics and pharmaceutical companies; and implement strategic communications and advocacy campaigns in support of our goals. In particular, we seek to take on the issues and strategies that benefit the most marginalized in our society.
The impetus for RHTP's founding was to ensure that women in the United States would have access to a type of medication abortion pill known as mifepristone. More recently, RHTP was at the forefront of a broad-based coalition of organizations and individuals seeking to bring emergency contraceptive pills over-the-counter – an effort that culminated in a long-awaited victory in 2013 when the Food and Drug Administration approved sales of Plan B One-Step without a prescription for people of all ages.
