[jobsthatareLEFT] MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger--Organizer (Los Angeles)

Position Title: Organizer

MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger is a national nonprofit working to end hunger among people of all faiths and backgrounds in the United States and Israel.

MAZON, which means "food" or "sustenance" in Hebrew, was the first national organization to rally the American Jewish community around the issue of hunger, and remains the only national Jewish organization dedicated exclusively to that same cause.

MAZON employs three interrelated strategies – education and advocacy, partnership grantmaking and strategic initiatives – in our effort to approach the problem of hunger holistically. We are committed to ensuring hungry people have access to the resources they need today, and working to develop and advance long-term solutions so that no one goes hungry tomorrow.

Position Overview:

MAZON Advocacy Project (MAP) is a strategic initiative that engages and trains synagogue partners and transforms them into effective advocates to advance the interests and dignity of those struggling with food insecurity. MAP provides synagogues with the opportunity to move beyond "food drives" and to take collective actions around achievable hunger solutions. Through actions, congregations also learn first-hand the systemic challenges and competing interests that have enabled hunger to persist on a broad scale.

Supported by MAZON's National Synagogue Organizer, each MAP is built around:

  • Leadership team made up of members of the local synagogues

  • Issues that are actionable and winnable with broad local impact

  • Training and mentoring in transferable advocacy and organizing skills

  • Commitment to maximize the unique role and contribution of congregations

Since 2012, MAZON has launched MAP efforts that have engaged over 30 synagogues in 8 states to respond to critical and urgent issues.

    Duties and Responsibilities:
MAZON believes that organizing should be a vocation and not merely a temporary job:

  • The primary role of the organizer will be to build networks of synagogues, organizations and coalition partners necessary for MAP's success. Through individual meetings, congregation teams, research and advocacy actions, they will identify MAP leaders, activate local congregations, cultivate partnerships, develop issue expertise and design effective advocacy actions to be executed by MAP congregations and members.

  • The organizer will be responsible for specific states or regions and may be assigned to assist in other MAPs and synagogue-based initiatives. They will serve as liaison with our partners and allies in the field, representing MAZON's interests and strategies.

  • The Organizer will report to the National Synagogue Organizer.

  • Other duties as assigned.

At least two years of professional work experience.
Experience in community organizing, social justice, public policy.

Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to partner effectively with leaders from peer organizations. Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across the organization to achieve integrated strategies that support MAZON's mission.
Ability to interact with a variety of stakeholders.
Deep knowledge of Judaism and experience working within the Jewish community.
Experience and comfort working with synagogues, Jewish organizations and nonprofits.
