SEIU Virginia 512 is looking for motivated, organized, and dedicated individuals with
prior organizing experience to build a strong union and a strong voice for working
families in Virginia. Must have passion for social justice and movement building,
excellent communications skills, ability to work long and irregular hours, and be able to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
 
Organizer position will be based in Fairfax, and will focus on organizing county
employees across Northern Virginia. Organizer will work as part of a team to build a
strong statewide union of Home Care providers and Public Employees.

Job Summary and Responsibilities:
 
The primary focus of the Organizer will be to support and empower members to grow
and strengthen their union. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
 
- Help execute a plan to build a strong union of home care providers and county workers.
 
-Take responsibility for organizing and implementing organization building and
mobilization activities in assigned turf.
 
-Grow the union through house visits, worksite visits, meetings and member-to-member outreach.
 
- Provide regular written and verbal reports.
 
- Mobilize members to participate in targeted advocacy activities.
 
- Identify, recruit, and train member leaders.
 
- Work with local staff to identify members involved in local community organizations
and educate members on connecting working family issues with their community
organizations, labor unions, etc.
 
- Other duties as assigned
 
Qualifications :
 
Candidates should be motivated self-starters with a commitment to building strong unions.
 
Candidate should have solid judgment in interacting and communicating with
workers, the public, political and community leaders.
 
Candidates must have a willingness and ability to take direction and function well within a team structure, and the ability to communicate effectively and respectfully in diverse communities.
 
Candidates should demonstrate a willingness to learn new skills.
 
Candidates should have experience with event turnout, volunteer recruitment, member sign up, and mobilization.
 
It is preferred that candidates have basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, and Excel; and  experience with Nationbuilder is a bonus.
 
Candidates should have strong written and verbal communications skills.
 
Candidates should have the ability to work irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
 
Candidates must possess  a valid U.S. driver's license, proof of auto insurance  and an automobile for business use.
 
Candidates should have the ability to effectively track progress toward goals.
 
Bilingual skills useful, but not required.
 
SEIU Virginia 512 is committed to providing staff development opportunities and
resources. It is recognized that the majority of an organizer's skill development happens through on-the-job experience.
 
Working Conditions:
 
• Long and irregular hours, including weekends and occasional holidays
 
• Travel within region and across the state
 
• Regular use of your own vehicle
 
Compensation: Organizer positions start at $34,000/year, and move up to $39,000 at the end of the first year. Generous benefits package, including full healthcare coverage,provided.
 
Term of Employment: This is a full-time permanent position.
