32BJ SEIU seeks to fill a Director of Accounting position based in our New York City office. The Director of Accounting has primary responsibility for daily accounting transactions, payroll, maintaining accounting procedures and internal controls, and financial reporting. The Director of Accounting directs and coordinates the daily activities of seven accounting and payroll staff.
With more than 145,000 members in 11 states and Washington DC, 32BJ SEIU is the largest property service workers union in the country, representing security officers; residential building doormen and porters; commercial office building cleaners and maintenance workers; school support workers; window cleaners; and food service workers. 32BJ is affiliated with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), an organization with more than 2.2 million members united by a belief in the dignity and worth of workers and their work.
32BJ SEIU has an annual budget of more than $100 million. The Director of Accounting will contribute to the success of 32BJ by supervising, monitoring and evaluating all day-to-day accounting activities in a manner that adequately safeguards the union's assets and complies with all applicable regulatory requirements.
Position Description:
The Director of Accounting reports to the Director of Finance. The primary day to day responsibilities for the position include, but are not limited to:
- Manage and oversee the daily operations of the accounting and payroll functions, which includes cash management, reconciliation, forecasting and financial reporting;
- Insure that appropriate policies and procedures are in place and enforced and makes recommendations for improvements and corrective action;
- Manage monthly and annual closing activities;
- Monitor and analyze accounting data and produce financial reports or statements;
- Coordinate and support annual internal audits and periodic external audits; is responsible for implementing agreed upon recommendations related to accounting procedures that result from audit findings;
- Ensure that the Union's financial records are maintained in compliance with Union policy, accounting GAAP guidelines and all regulatory requirements of the, IRS, DOL, FEC and state and local regulatory agencies where required;
- Support the Director of Finance and the Budget Coordinator in preparing the annual budget and in monitoring budget performance;
- Ensure that Union's accounting software system continues to operate as required; make recommendations and validate changes necessary to ensure accounting requirements continue to be met;
- Ensure that the accounting department continues to be staffed with qualified personnel who are capable for meeting the objectives and their responsibilities. Is responsible for the continued development of accounting department staff.
Qualifications include:
- 5-10 years of proven experience as an accounting manager;
- At least three years' experience working in the unique regulatory environment that governs the financial reporting requirements of not-for-profit organizations;
- Advanced computer skills, especially excel, and accounting software and databases;
- Ability to manipulate and manage large amounts of data;
- Proven knowledge of accounting principles, practices, standards, laws and regulations;
- High attention to detail and accuracy;
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw conclusions;
- Strong oral and written communications skills;
- BS or higher degree in Accounting or Finance.
Compensation:
We offer a competitive annualized salary of up to $105,000, dependent upon experience. A generous benefit package includes employer-paid medical, dental, vision, and prescription drug plans for employees and their eligible dependents, and a defined-benefit pension plan.
