AFSCME CLASS SPECIFICATIONS

 

Job Title             Assistant Director, Organizing & Field Services           Mgt Grade 7

 

Purpose

This position assists in the activities of the Organizing & Field Services Department, with a focus on managing internal organizing.  Develops and oversees the implementation of strategic plans aimed at rebuilding and strengthening local unions and affiliates.  Collaborates with the Department Director to support the mission of the union, move campaigns and programs, and implement the AFSCME elected leadership's vision.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES (Any one position may not include all of the specific duties and responsibilities listed.  Examples provide a general summary of the work required and should not be treated as a total and complete list of expected duties to be performed by employees in the classification.) 

- Oversees AFSCME locals and affiliates that have been placed under Administratorship and Organizing Committee Status. 

- Develops and oversees the implementation of strategic plans and budgets to rebuild and strengthen locals and affiliates.

- Monitors the implementation of strategic plans, provides clear timelines and goals, and ensures that benchmarks are being met.

-  Works with Organizing & Field Services staff and Regional Directors on staff deployment and development.

- Focuses on leadership development and acts a resource for and mentor to administrators and staff.

- Supports the executive office.

- Oversees governance and union administration issues including officer suspensions and complaints from members.

- Builds relationships with AFSCME activists, members and staff around the country.

- Performs other related work as required.

Staff, elected leaders, and activists across the union; community groups including public interest and advocacy groups, public officials, and unorganized workers.

Direction and Decision Making

This position reports to the Director of Organizing and Field Services.  Works under broad direction and keeps Director regularly apprised of developments during projects.

Physical Requirements (as required by ADA)

Work is performed in an office, workplace, and community environment.  For this you must possess the ability to drive and make home visits.  Extensive travel and extended work hours are required.

Education

Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with a degree in labor relations or public administration or extensive knowledge of labor relations, organizing principles or any equivalent combination of education, training, skills and/or experience which would be acquired normally through the completion of a degree or with first hand field experience.

Experience

- Extensive knowledge of and at least 10 years of experience working for a labor union in the areas of organizing, research, representation, and education.

- Advanced knowledge of organizing and managing campaigns.

- Advanced leadership and evaluation techniques.

- Advanced knowledge of public interest organizations and advocacy groups with involvement and influence in emerging employment sectors.

- Advanced ability to lead, manage, and supervise personnel.

- Advanced oral and written communication skills.

- Extensive ability to make presentations and provide training.
