Working Families

Working Families is a progressive independent political organization that fights for economic and racial justice — and wins. Formed by labor unions, community organizations and grassroots activists, our aim is to advance bold policy goals that support dignity and justice for working class communities and communities of color. Working Families combines issue advocacy campaigns with a year-round electoral engagement to win ground breaking policies and elect strong progressive champions.

Connecticut Political Director

Working Families is searching for a Connecticut Political Director who can build and develop coalitions, leaders, organizing strategies and the organizational base to support issue and electoral campaigns that advance the interests of Connecticut's working families. In the past, our Political Directors have played an integral role in our success on campaigns to raise the minimum wage, pass paid sick days statewide, advance progressive taxation, protect public education, and more.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and facilitate diverse, powerful coalitions.
  • Plan and oversee legislative campaigns, e.g. organizing coalitions, media events, lobby visits, protests and rallies, etc.
  • Plan and oversee electoral organizing, e.g., questionnaires, interviews, filing endorsements, field, petitioning, candidate support.
  • Build durable relationships with key leaders of allied organization to ensure alignment around campaign goals as well as larger, long-term vision.
  • Identify, develop, train and maintain storytellers who can participate in the legislative process, actions, earned and paid media programs and as local leaders.
  • Work closely with communications staff to develop compelling narratives around our campaigns and ensure all actions and messaging reinforce our brand and values.
  • Engage affiliated organizations to build and support the Working Families base within their membership.
  • Direct lobbying and legislative outreach.
  • Develop and implement plans to meet fundraising goals for campaign work.
  • Work directly within supported political campaigns.
  • Identify, pursue and apply for grants and funding opportunities for issues Working Families organizes on.
  • Some fundraising to implement core functions while harnessing and organizing additional resources to build the party and win priority campaigns.
  • Drafting written campaign plans for specific projects.
  • Support the canvass to train and prepare them for work in the field.
  • Other duties, as required.

Requirements

  • A sincere passion and commitment to social, economic, and racial justice.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Proven organizing ability, and effectiveness engaging potential activists and supporters.
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills to assess threats and recommend actionable solutions.
  • Relentless drive, tenacity and a willingness to do whatever it takes to advance our mission and values.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to manage the technical aspects of a project such as paperwork, deadlines, etc.
  • Strong follow-through and self-direction on assignments.
  • Ability to work effectively with strong personalities, peers, public officials, and allies.
  • Minimum of three years similar experience in grassroots non-profit, labor, or political organization.
  • Driver's license and willingness for regular in-state travel.

Salary is commensurate with experience; excellent benefits including medical, dental, and vision insurance and 401(k) plan.
