Political Organizer

 

Hartford CT

 

The Congress of Connecticut Community Colleges (the 4Cs), a Hartford-based public employee union, seeks a Political Organizer to be responsible for a comprehensive program of legislative action. The position is FT (35 hours per week).

 

Summary

 

The 4Cs Political Organizer advises the 4Cs president in all legislative matters and is the point person for developing member legislative activities. The Political Organizer's responsibilities include recommending to the union leadership a vision for a strategic legislative advocacy program, building and maintaining relationships with Connecticut legislators of all political persuasions; Connecticut state officials; SEBAC, SEIU, and other unions, and coordinating lobbying activities with organized labor, student, community, non-profit, and other groups with whom our union shares common interests.

 

Example of Duties

 

The 4Cs Political Organizer's duties include developing and helping execute the union's state legislative and budgetary strategy, developing and implementing strategies for moving or stopping state legislation, supporting union contract negotiations, working to mobilize members for participation in state legislative and budgetary proceedings, lobbying members of the legislature, administration, and other state agencies, preparing reports on legislative, political, budgetary, and administrative issues, and conducting political and legislative trainings and workshops. Duties also include coordinating with Student Activities Directors to inform, engage, and empower students in the legislative process, and developing relationships with allies and coalitions to help advance the union's state legislative and budgetary agenda.

 

Qualifications

 

Successful candidates must have a minimum three years of equivalent experience and a Bachelors degree or higher, or equivalent knowledge gained via experience.

 

Successful candidates must also have demonstrated political analysis skills; demonstrated effectiveness in employing legislative strategies at the legislature, including process, bill analysis, and coalition building, and demonstrated effectiveness lobbying in environments of great complexity. Successful candidates must also have knowledge of issues impacting American higher education, knowledge of Community College systems, and direct experience with Community College students and the issues that impact their academic progress.

 

Successful candidates must also have proven ability to work with diverse groups, knowledge of organized labor and political issues, demonstrated commitment to unions and their mission, superb written and oral communication skills, information technology literacy skills, flexibility and self-directedness, and ability to work evenings and weekends, as needed.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

Preference will be given to applicants who possess working knowledge of Connecticut politics, budgetary and legislative processes, and working relationships with state officials who impact public higher education in Connecticut.

 

Fluency in a second language us also preferred.

 

Compensation

 

Salary starts at $63,093. [CCP 18 Step 1]
