GENERAL SUMMARY
Students for Education Reform (SFER) is seeking an entrepreneurial, seasoned, and strategic leader to lead SFER's community organizing efforts. This role will entail managing our state-based directors and organizers, nurturing the development of effective local SFER organizing shops, ensuring fidelity to our organizing model across the country, and building and managing our training and communications teams.
SFER is a community organizing nonprofit, and the person in this role will hold the following responsibilities: ensuring our members are powerful and effective leaders; building genuine student and community power through a strong organizing model; articulating bold campaigns informed by our Statement of Principles and Core Values; developing effective nearand long-term strategies; using the best organizing tactics and practices; and constantly learning and improving our work.
SFER develops college students into grassroots organizers who fight for educational justice in their communities. SFER is a student movement that champions educational equity for all children.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The National Director of Organizing will evaluate the current organizing model for each state coalition and synthesize and create national standards for SFER's outreach model. He or she will set membership and campaign goals and will ensure state staff and student leaders have the support they need to meet these goals. The National Director of Organizing will work closely with locally staffed states and with states supported remotely to ensure that our organizing work is effective.
The National Director of Organizing's scope of work will include the following:
· Designing and Implementing Organizing Strategy:
o Refine, support, and norm our organizing model
o Oversee the development and execution of state-level strategic growth plans
o Oversee the development and execution of state-level issue and electoral campaign plans developed in response to key opportunities; ensure that SFER actions are courageous, strategic & impactful
o Track and analyze membership growth; continuously improve outreach strategies based on trends
o Design and oversee execution of a comprehensive learning and development scope and sequence for SFER staff organizers and members
o Creatively use technology and media to accelerate our organizing work
o Research, evaluate, and recommend new organizing initiatives and approaches, e.g. exploring opportunities to include community members and high school students in our membership; undertaking proactive member recruitment
o Research, evaluate, and recommend new sites for expansion
o Ensure that our organizing work and membership programs advance our core value of dignity, are diverse and inclusive, empower every student member and staff member in their own identity, and actively advance racial justice
· Management and Leadership:
o As a member of the Management Team, contribute to the organization's growth plan, annual and long-term planning, performance management, culture, and key strategic decisions
o Manage state Executive Directors; oversee the creation & execution of their growth, outreach & campaign strategies
o Partner with the leader of our Program and Initiatives Team, who oversees the delivery & refinement of (A) coaching to non-staffed SFER coalitions, (B) our leadership development programs for members; (C) our member trainings; and (D) our SFER Action Network fellowships. Ensure the Program and Initiatives team's work integrates tightly with our organizing model and our state campaigns.
o Manage our communications efforts, ensuring that our campaigns and actions earn positive and impactful media coverage
o Manage, mentor, support and hold accountable a remote team
QUALIFICATIONS
Strong candidates must believe in the vision, principles, and core values of SFER and be driven by our mission of supporting a student-led social justice movement for educational equity. We are seeking a candidate who has proven community organizing, management, strategy and program development experience.
"Must haves" for this position:
· A bachelor's degree
· At least 8-10 years of professional community organizing and management experience, including at least two cycles of political or organized labor experience
· Experience recruiting, hiring and managing a large team
· Previous success managing, developing, training and coaching community organizers and volunteers to recruit, develop issues, execute campaigns, and demonstrate measurable "wins" for a movement
· Strategic thinking and communication skills. Ability to articulate specific, achievable goals, strategies, and tactics; ability to plan with the end in mind; ability to work autonomously and take the initiative to communicate internally and externally as part of an entrepreneurial team.
· Evidence of ability to make managerial and strategic decisions in the face of challenges and while managing rapid growth
· Proven track record of crafting and implementing accountability processes and establishing targets and metrics.
· Demonstrated record as both a team player and a self-starter
· Strong project management skills
· Excellent communications skills, including across lines of difference like race, class, and ethnicity
· An exceptional ability to cultivate and develop relationships and networks with a diverse constituent base, preferably around education issues
· Ability to work non-traditional hours, including weekday evenings and some weekends
