Summary

Conservation Colorado is seeking a Communications Director based in Denver who will bring vision, energy, and passion to their work. The Strategic Communications Director will lead all external communications for the organization, ensuring that Conservation Colorado is a prominent voice on conservation issues in the state and that our issues are portrayed in a pro-conservation frame. This is a senior level position responsible for leading a team of talented, highly motivated staff in the Communications Department. The position is based in Denver but will require some travel throughout Colorado.

About Conservation Colorado

Conservation Colorado works to protect Colorado's environment and quality of life by mobilizing people and electing conservation‐minded policy makers. We work closely with policy leaders, citizen activists, businesses and other conservation nonprofits, and have built a reputation as one of the leading conservation advocacy organizations in the region. This coming year we will be tackling everything from implementing Colorado's first ever state water plan to driving cutting edge renewable energy and climate change policies to moving key public lands and wilderness bills that will protect iconic places in Colorado.

Job Responsibilities

The Communications Director is responsible for the following:

  • Developing external communications strategies that help change the issue environment and drive policy wins; including proactive pitches, rapid response and longer term strategy.

  • Developing and refining organizational and campaign messaging, ensuring compelling framing and consistency from the organization.

  • Working with key staff and partners to develop short and long-term communications plans.

  • Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with key national, statewide, and local reporters/editors/bloggers in traditional and online media.

  • Producing and overseeing the development of high quality communications materials.

  • Overseeing social media strategy, growth, and engagement.

  • Providing leadership, support and accountability for team of 4 FTEs in Communications Department.

  • Seeking out new voices from communities who are disproportionately impacted by anti-conservation policies.

  • Actively participating in achieving other organizational priorities as needed, including fundraising efforts.

Qualifications

We're seeking a strategic thinker & problem solver who is results-focused, highly-driven, possesses outstanding interpersonal communication skills, and is organized and meticulous.


You should possess:

  • A passion for protecting Colorado's land, air, water, and people through citizen action.

  • A demonstrated ability to maintain grace under pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, ever changing environment.

  • Experience creating messaging or organizing racially, ethnically, and/or geographically diverse communities.

  • Excellent writing skills and ability to present information in new and creative ways.

  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to work independently.

  • Ability to craft audience specific messaging.

  • Professionalism to act as a representative of Conservation Colorado in myriad situations and circumstances.

  • Ability to navigate difficult conversations with people who don't agree with us or who have competing priorities.


Ability to speak Spanish and understanding/experience with Colorado politics and environmental issues are a plus but not required.


The position requires a willingness to work evening and weekend hours as needed.


Compensation and Benefits

Compensation depends on experience and is highly competitive. Includes health/dental benefits, retirement with match, paid time off program and sabbatical program.
