DEPUTY COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Philadelphia Mayor's Office of Communications will have two Deputy Communications Directors, who will each be responsible for media relations and external communications for a portfolio of approximately six City departments, offices and/or cabinets. In addition to serving as the only authorized spokesperson for these departments, the Deputy Communications Directors will also be responsible for ensuring that these departments' messaging is reinforcing the Administration's overall vision. The Deputy Communications Directors will work closely with the Department heads in their portfolio and report to the Director in the Mayor's Office of Communications. RESPONSIBILITIES
Serve as only authorized spokesperson for a portfolio of City Departments
Reinforce Administration's communications objectives across the City Departments within their portfolio
Assist as needed with internal Communications for the City departments within their portfolio
Assist the senior staffers in those departments with any communications related needs, including drafting press releases, talking points, speeches; writing and developing literature about the Departments; and creating copy for the Departments' web sites. .
Staff the Mayor at certain public events
SKILLS
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Must be able to handle simultaneous "priority" projects and meet established deadlines.
Must be able to work extended hours on an as-needed basis.
Must be able to work pro-actively with senior-level administration staff, intergovernmental affairs, elected officials, community leaders, and journalists.
EXPERIENCE
B/A or B/S from an accredited four-year college or university with coursework in communications, journalism, political science, or liberal arts, or equivalent experience.
4-5 years experience in media relations, public affairs, and/or campaign communications.
