Social Media Intern
The New American Leaders Project (NALP) is the only national organization specifically focused on preparing first- and second-generation immigrants for civic leadership and to run for local, city and state office. Nearly one in five Americans are either immigrants or were born in the U.S. to at least one immigrant parent. By training immigrant leaders nationally, NALP works to expand the number of immigrants in leadership positions, increase voter participation in immigrant communities and allow immigrant voters more opportunities to engage with leaders who reflect their unique experiences.
Position Description
NALP is seeking a Social Media intern with excellent writing skills and an ability to multi-task to join our team. The candidate should have a strong knowledge and proficiency of various social media platforms. The Social Media intern will be responsible for working with the Communications Director to oversee NALP's Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram accounts and come up with original content to keep each medium current. Interns will follow topical immigrant/immigration related news to assist with creating social media copy.
The internship will provide insight into immigrant electoral politics in the United States. Interns will work with senior staff, and will have opportunities to participate in other aspects of NALP's work that align with his or her interests.
Responsibilities
· Follow news stories on immigration policy and immigrant candidates for office;
· Engage NALP alumni via Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn
· ·Monitor performance indicators such as impressions, clicks
· Brainstorm and create social media campaigns
· Attend events with NALP staff;
· Provide ongoing support to the program team;
· Curate content for social media channels: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram
· Help with social media pre-strategy research
· Research new trends in the social world and bring fresh ideas to the team
· Monitor current social campaigns and suggest revisions when necessary
Qualifications and Skills
· Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel;
· Familiarity with Twitter, Hootsuite/Tweetdeck, Facebook, Instagram and Flickr
· Self-starter who happily takes initiative on individual projects, but also works well in cooperative decision-making settings;
· Strong organizational/multi-tasking skills, detail oriented, and an ability to meet deadlines on time;
· Demonstrated interest in immigration;
· Passionate about improving minority representation in all tiers of U.S. leadership.
· Familiarity with Google Drive and Dropbox;
Benefits
While this is an unpaid internship, class credit may be arranged with your college or university. As an intern, you will gain the experience and skills necessary for working in the non-profit industry. In addition to program coordination, you will also learn about immigrant civic engagement and electoral politics, and you will have an opportunity to participate in other aspects of our work. A small stipend can also be arranged to help cover transportation and other costs.
Time Commitment
A minimum of 15 weeks and 15 hours per week is required. Occasional evenings and weekends may required during an event. Scheduling is flexible based on applicant's availability. The majority of internship activities will take place at our office in New York City during office hours (9am-5pm, Mon-Friday).
