Alabama State Director - Planned Parenthood Southeast, Inc.

Overview:
In this newly created role, the State Director serves as the primary contact with key community leaders and coalition partners in helping to build a longer term public affairs and community engagement program in support of access and expansion to reproductive health care in the state. Given the fast changing economic and political environments, the State Director will thrive in entrepreneurial settings and be able to operate at the most strategic levels and execute as needed with limited staff and resources.
The State Director serves as the primary state leader, advocate and strategist, collaborating with the affiliate's teams in the areas of public affairs, legislative affairs, advocacy, development/fundraising, and communications.
In this highly collaborative and coordinated effort, the State Director manages all non-clinical operations of the local affiliate including public policy, development, communications and public affairs staff and creates the opportunity to attract and engage additional staff in support of expansion work in the state. The State Director will help provide an environment of mentorship and professional development in this unique time for the organization.
The State Director will serve as a partner and resource for the Medical & Clinical Services staff to help translate policy issues that may affect their ability to deliver services. In this unique partnership the State Director will also work closely with the Financial Services staff and provide guidance for yearly and long term budget development and planning.
Some of the specific areas of focus include:
Fundraising & Development:
• Directs statewide fundraising and has accountability for annual fundraising goals as part of affiliate wide goals
• Implements state level fundraising plans
• Identifies potential major & principal donors including foundation and corporate sponsors
• Coordinates with development team on donor cultivation events & community engagement events.
Advocacy & Community Engagement:
• Manages and executes implementation of all community outreach, grassroots, volunteer and engagement opportunities
• Establishes "Friends of PP" and "PP Ambassador" engagement programs
• Oversees outreach programs and strategies for client recruitment
• Identifies opportunities to establish partnerships in the provisioning of medical and educational services
State Policy & State Legislation:
• Manages state level policy work with staff, consultants and partners
• Develops state wide legislative priorities in coordination with affiliate staff
• Develops partnerships to help move legislative priorities forward
• Lobbies elected officials on behalf of the organization and the local affiliate
• Creates opportunities for education both with elected officials and candidates on the work and mission of the organization
• Monitors elected officials and candidate positions and voting records
Political & Electoral Work:
• Manages electoral activities
• Manages grassroots and grass tops organizers and mobilizes local supporters and advocates
• Conducts voter identification and engagement campaigns and programs
Note: This position will be based in Montgomery but requires the utmost flexibility with frequent state-wide travel.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will be an exceptional state-level leader able to both view projects at a macro level while also keeping track of the most granular of details. S/he must be unflappable, with excellent people skills, in particular partnership and relationship building with both internal and external stakeholders, and impeccable discretion. While no one candidate will embody all the qualifications enumerated below, the ideal candidate will possess many of the following professional and personal abilities, attributes and experiences:
• A minimum of 3-5 years of successful senior management experience in nonprofit advocacy, political environments or fundraising/foundation environments.
• Undergraduate degree with relevant experience; advanced degree preferred.
• Visible results in securing financial support from principal and major gift donors as well as foundations and corporate sponsors.
• Strong (current) working relationships with state oriented elected officials, coalition partners and community leaders and local press.
• Ability to manage program and staff resources and its budget judiciously and resourcefully with an eye toward sustainability.
• Strong financial management skills appropriate to the oversight of a broad range of projects and contracts.
• Expertise in long-term strategic planning as well as short-term crisis management.
• Strategic thinker with the ability to help affiliates assess their challenges.
• Effective communicator who can communicate with all levels of affiliate staff, national staff and local stakeholders.
• Gravitas paired with professional integrity to effectively represent and promote Planned Parenthood externally.
• Unflappable in times of crisis and high stress.
• Understanding for the role of health provision and advocacy that translates to an unflinching commitment to exceptional work product.
