Communications Director
Position Overview: Action Now's mission is to build power in low-income communities of color, elevating the issues and voices of people from those communities (like Englewood, North Lawndale and Garfield Park), while building social and political power in order to change the public narrative and shift public policy towards racial, social and economic justice.
We need someone who has a deep and personal passion for justice, a knack for story-telling, a strategic mind, and a go-getter attitude that wants to put in the work to spread our message and help us fulfill our mission. The Communications Director will develop a expert communications plan, directly managing communications activities that promote, enhance, and protect the organization's mission, vision, membership and power so that we can effectively and efficiently do the work that we need to do to fight for justice and transform our communities.
Workload Expectations Include:
External Communications: Oversee the organization's earned media and social media work, including the creation, oversight and execution of media plans; write all press releases, quarterly print newsletters, monthly e-newsletters, e-blast call to action, talking points, speeches, and media alerts for target audiences, create and maintain relationships with reporters and news assignment staff that cover our issues, Help plan organizational protests, rallies, press, with a goal of compelling the right audiences to believe in and act on our vision, attend and document all of our actions/public activities through video, photography and social media
Online Capacity Building: Manage and maintain our websites and online identities, write monthly e-newsletters, integrate online and digital strategies into all appropriate campaigns, create tools of engagement that foster communication between our base and the organization, Supervise the production of timely and original social media and digital content (not just re-sharing what other people have done)
Data Integration: Incorporate data driven strategies to ensure coordinated digital program, coordinating VAN information as needed, ensuring that comments from organizers around what is really happening on the ground gets integrated into communications/messaging
Grassroots Leadership Development: Develop and manage a cadre of leaders who are adept at speaking to the press on issues, elevating the vision and message of the organization, and telling their own story as spokespeople for the organization; developing leaders who understand how to adapt messaging for different audiences
Fundraising: Create and execute a fundraising strategy that helps contribute to financial sustainability of the organization
Work Ethic Expectations Include:
"Get it Done" Attitude: You must stay positive about your ability to succeed and take the initiative to find ways to contribute to all aspects of the organization. If you see a gap, make a suggestion and fill the gap, be proactive about your own workload and actively engaging other staff if help is needed. You have to be a problem solver and a go-getter. Own your workload and find ways to build power for organization by using your unique skillset. Be a self-starter and a self-motivator by finishing tasks in a timeline manner, reporting on when they are complete and picking up the next task without waiting on someone to tell you what to do
"If you don't know, you better ask somebody": Internal communications are as important as external. You need to be able to work with a team, ask questions if you are unclear about something, be eager to improve and grow yourself professionally, attend, engage and contribute to all staff meetings
Qualifications
Experience working with low-income communities of color
Strong evidence of cultural competency
3-5 years of experience with communications strategy, social media, public relations
1-2 years of community, labor or political "direct action" organizing or advocacy
1-2 years of experience fundraising (through online, fundraisers, or grants)
Strong track record of commitment to racial justice
Preferred Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, or a related field
