WASHINGTON COORDINATOR
FULL TIME • STARTS ASAP • COMPETITIVE PAY • EXCELLENT BENEFITS • BASED IN WASHINGTON, DC
MoveOn.org is a community of millions of members working together to create progressive change in America. We take on campaigns to challenge entrenched power and push back against right-wing policies, while pursuing economic, racial, and social justice.
Recent campaigns have included successfully helping to defend the Syrian refugee program and the breakthrough diplomatic agreement with Iran; helping take the Confederate battle flag off of the South Carolina capitol grounds and the shelves of major retailers; defending Planned Parenthood; and working to make progressive economic populism a front-and-center issue in the 2016 election through the "Run Warren Run" campaign to encourage Elizabeth Warren to run for president and through our members' endorsement of Bernie Sanders. We've also worked to combat climate change, defend civil liberties, push for racial justice and a more just economic system, and more.
With the heightened political energy of the election year ahead, 2016 promises to be a year of fierce fights and big opportunities.
The Washington Coordinator, working closely with MoveOn.org's Washington Director, handles incoming and outgoing communication, strategic prioritization, scheduling, administration, and project management of MoveOn.org's DC advocacy efforts, office, and budget. The Coordinator will also provide light administrative support for MoveOn.org's two Executive Directors. This job requires constant juggling, organization, professionalism, patience, positivity, and calm under fire in the midst of David vs. Goliath battles to save the country.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Second brain for our work in Washington: Work side by side with the Washington Director on a daily basis, keeping our DC efforts on track and on time.
Email and communications superconnector: MoveOn is a virtual organization, with staff working remotely from across the country. The work of MoveOn's Washington office, by contrast, involves a constant thrum of face-to-face meetings around town. You'll be the connective tissue to make sure that what happens here doesn't stay here—tracking incoming email and ensuring that you or the Washington Director engages as necessary without anything slipping through the cracks.
Meeting manager: MoveOn doesn't just campaign. It convenes. You might be called upon to moderate coalition email lists, herd cats, and, for meetings, make sure agendas are circulated in advance, call-in numbers are listed in Google Calendar invitations, and vegan-friendly snacks are plentiful. You might take notes during meetings and calls, and you'll make sure that everyone understands their follow-ups and actually follows up.
Deputy online organizer: You'll tag-team with the Washington Director to get email blasts out. In the process, you'll learn (or, if you're experienced in online campaigning, build your mastery of) the craft of online organizing from the inside.
Schedule ninja: Scheduling is strategy. You will absorb and understand the short and long-term strategic priorities of MoveOn and the Washington Director, make scheduling recommendations that reflect those priorities, and communicate scheduling decisions to all involved in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
Team logistician: You'll book flights, track and manage budgets, make sure contracts get signed, and generally fight the inexorable advance of entropy in the universe. This administrative work will primarily focus on the Washington Director and DC operation, but will also include periodic support for the Executive Directors of MoveOn.org Civic Action (our c4) and Political Action (our PAC).
DC horizon scanner. You'll keep a lookout for upcoming opportunities and challenges that MoveOn generally, and the Washington Director specifically, should stay on top of. Conferences and events, protests and hearings, Congressional votes and midnight conspiracy meetings: part of your job is making sure we have a finger on the pulse of progressive Washington.
REQUIRED QUALITIES AND SKILLS
Unflappable, de-flap-ifying, and positive. You're grounded, mature, self-aware, patient, and present. When things get crazy, you get calm and practical. And you keep your verve and sense of humor even in the midst of the inevitable occasional chaos of a campaigning organization.
An enthusiastic enabler of others' work. You love working in tandem with people to help them maximize their productivity—vital for a role that involves wrangling the work, time, and attention of our Washington Director. You're empathic and emotionally intelligent, tuned-in to the people around you.
Decisive and communicative. When something needs to get done, you point it out and make it happen.
A meticulous, organized planner and a resourceful, flexible executor. You're methodical. You're rigorous. If you put something on a to-do list, it doesn't disappear. You're outstanding at estimating how long things will take, keeping them on track, and re-shuffling plans when needed.
Tech-friendly. You're delighted to learn new ways to use technology to make things happen. Maybe you've even got a few tricks in your back pocket already.
