POSITION AVAILABLE:  Senior Organizer (Position located in Michigan)

REPORTS TO:  Vice President of Campaigns and Strategic Partnerships

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  Common Cause is seeking an accomplished, strategic, campaign organizer to lead our efforts to build a stronger, multiracial base throughout the state of Michigan that will build on our victories and achieving justice by holding power accountable. Michigan's current crisis in democracy presents a major opportunity to mobilize the community to pass major government and democracy and ethics reforms that returns power to the people. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:   Primary staff responsibility for mobilizing and activating Common Cause/Michigan's grassroots members in local, state, and federal advocacy efforts; Develop and implement organizing strategies to build support for the Common Cause agenda; Likely tactics include petition and letter-writing drives, coalition-building, news conferences, email, social networking and on-line campaigns, as well as grassroots lobbying; Strategic coalition support, organize members and educate the public and elected officials on issues; Develop and write public outreach materials including factsheets, action alerts, presentations and online updates; Candidate must have own transportation and be willing to travel both in Michigan and nationally with members; Recruit and develop leadership of grassroots members, especially youth and people living in low-income communities and communities of color; Draft and deliver testimony at the legislature, and train CC leaders to testify, conduct visits with elected representatives and organize press conferences.  

QUALIFICATIONS 5-7 years of experience in community organizing working with low income and communities of color; Track record of success in building coalitions in pursuit of a shared agenda to achieve concrete results; Experience in running field campaigns and ballot initiatives; Ability to build and cultivate relationships with people and organizations of various orientations and backgrounds; Flexible, creative, problem solver; A demonstrated passion for social justice and reform issues; Bachelor's degree or equivalent; Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; Excellent interpersonal communication and public speaking skills and the ability to motivate people to act; Demonstrated ability for clear, concise and persuasive writing; Ability to work independently, initiate projects and work with minimal supervision; Familiarity with, and skill in, online advocacy and social media campaigning; Knowledge of state legislative and government processes, reform issues helpful; Flexibility to work nights and weekends and travel extensively
