Philanthropy Research Officer


Rainforest Trust seeks an experienced, enthusiastic, well-organized, and detail-oriented development professional who is a passionate conservationist to serve as the Donor Research Officer, analyzing information for the organization. This position supports Rainforest Trust's senior leadership and philanthropy teams by focusing their efforts and equipping them with the information they need.

Rainforest Trust is a highly efficient and effective non-profit founded in 1988 with the mission to purchase and protect threatened tropical forests and to save endangered wildlife through local partnerships and community engagement. Celebrating 27 years of conservation, we have protected 11.5 million acres of tropical forests in 20 countries across more than 100 project sites. Because of our efficiency, we consistently earn Charity Navigator's top 4-star rating.



Essential Functions:

Create in-depth profiles on individuals, institutions, corporations and foundations using a variety of research resources

Accurately log and track information into a donor database

Analyze existing accounts to identify greater capacity and suggest a cultivation plan to senior management

Alert the philanthropy team to findings, news stories, and other information related to donors, foundations, and corporations

Write concise research documents with attention to accuracy and detail

Interpret and synthesize financial data

Work closely with all members of Rainforest Trust teams, ensuring collaboration between departments

Help to shape overall strategies to continually increase support and program growth

Perform other duties as assigned



Requirements:

Bachelor's degree and a minimum of two years experience with donor research in a non-profit fundraising role with a proven record of major gifts success

Experience with donor tracking and/or database software like eTapestry

Passion for international conservation and commitment to the mission of Rainforest Trust; bilingual preferred

Effective interpersonal skills

Excellent writing, research and communication skills

Proven expertise in building and maintaining positive relationships with diverse individuals; high level of comfort with direct donor interaction, including discussions of personal and 
family finances and asking for money

Natural problem-solver who exudes energy and initiative

Flexible team player who is able to work independently; must be very organized and able to effectively manage multiple projects and conflicting priorities

Demonstrated ability to set and achieve goals as well as meet deadlines

The candidate will work in our central office with 20 staff in Warrenton, Virginia, just 45 minutes west of Washington DC.
