Texas Organizing Project is hiring: Multiple Positions
Here at the Texas Organizing Project (TOP), we work to improve the lives of low and moderate income families in the second largest State in the Union. While Texas is the fastest growing State with more and more families moving here, we are alarmed by the fast growing poverty rate, lack of access to quality health care and education for many Texas families, and the huge rise in income and racial inequality. We are proud to say that TOP has a proven track record of running campaigns that address these issues and believe that we must build power through community organizing, partnering with other progressive organizations and labor unions, and civic engagement to make systemic change.
TOP campaigns are in five (5) issue areas:
· Healthcare
· Immigration
· Education
· Jobs
· Neighborhood standards and improvements
TOP is a membership-based organization that conducts issue advocacy, lobbying efforts and electoral organizing on behalf of working families in Texas. We are an energetic and tight knit team that works hard and is supportive of each other. We are a financially viable and family friendly organization that is currently organizing in Houston, Harris County, Dallas, and San Antonio with expansion opportunities in other major metro Regions of Texas.
TOP is currently seeking qualified applicants for the following positions:
· Statewide Immigration Campaign Director
· Bexar County Campaign Coordinator
· Dallas Immigration Campaign Organizer
· Dallas Schools Campaign Organizer
Statewide Immigration Campaign Director: Background
Up until recently, Texas' elected officials shied away from public attacks on immigrant families, and at times even passed policies that improved their lives. For example, Texas was the first state to offer undocumented students in-state tuition. But now, with the November 2014 election of Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick and Governor Greg Abbott, Texas, with the second largest population of undocumented people, has become ground zero of the anti-immigrant movement. Governor Abbott, then Attorney General, wasted no time in initiating a lawsuit in December 2014 to challenge the incredible organizing victory of President Obama's executive action establishing DAPA and expanded DACA. After being sworn in as Governor, Abbott supported a barrage of anti-immigrant bills proposed during the 2015 legislative session to repeal in-state tuition for undocumented students, ramp up law enforcement near the border, and force local police departments to inquire about a person's immigration status. Like California and Arizona, this anti-immigrant wave creates a potential atmosphere for politicizing and galvanizing a population that until now has been on the sidelines. This can be the beginning of a mass-based movement for immigrant rights in Texas, but it's up to us to seize the moment by engaging people and training them with the skills to engage others.
That's why Texas Organizing Project is organizing immigrant families in Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio and driving a statewide immigrant rights campaign with the following components:
· Outreach and workshops to inform and screen thousands of eligible Texans in order to prepare them to apply for DAPA and DACA plus
· Street actions and strategic communications to defend the victory of the executive action and fight back against those who intend to take it away
· Comprehensive local campaigns to win policies like municipal IDs that will add a layer of protection to the lives of tens of thousands of immigrants

Job Description: Dallas Education Campaign Organizer
Texas Organizing Project is seeking a talented and dedicated Campaign Organizer to build our organization through helping drive a citywide campaign to fight for excellent public schools for every child.
This campaign was started in late 2009 by TOP neighborhood leaders – parents and grandparents - to put a stop to the school to prison pipeline in Dallas ISD schools, where students of color make up more than 96% of total district enrollment. Since then TOP leaders, along with coalition partners, have made great strides by organizing for and winning a district wide Task Force on the issue and an alternative campus-wide approach to discipline that has been implemented in 26 Dallas ISD schools. In 2014 TOP parent leaders and allies were successful in stopping an effort to turn the entire school district into a home rule charter district, which could have potentially stripped away parent, student, and voter rights as well as jeopardized efforts to continue curbing the pipeline to prison and improving access to an excellent public education for all students. The current focus of the campaign is on getting Dallas ISD to use the community school model to turn around struggling schools.
