The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey (ACLU-NJ) is hiring a Visual Communications Strategist to provide high-level visual and digital communications support of the ACLU-NJ's dynamic work protecting and defending civil rights and liberties across New Jersey. The full-time position is designed for a communicator with an eye for design and an aptitude for digital media platforms. The Visual Communications Strategist is supervised by the Communications Director.


Founded in 1960, the ACLU of New Jersey is the state's leading organization dedicated to defending and advancing civil liberties and civil rights. Whether in the courts, legislatures, or in communities, the ACLU-NJ fights on a daily basis for criminal justice reform, drug law reform, free speech, racial justice, privacy, immigrants' rights, reproductive rights, religious freedom, due process, LGBT rights, and voting rights. With tens of thousands of members, activists, and supporters, the ACLU-NJ works in every corner of our state to defend the principle that every individual's rights must be protected equally under the law, regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability or national origin.


The ACLU-NJ is headquartered in Newark, New Jersey. Our staff consists of 16 full-time staff members plus a number of regular in-office volunteers and interns.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Produce beautiful and effective visual media used in communication and public education, including photographs, videos, and graphics.
  • Design brochures, pamphlets, one-page policy papers and other printed materials used in communication, advocacy, and public education programs.
  • Create clear and easily understood information graphics using materials from in-depth data analyses and legal documents.
  • Oversee all social media, including visual components.
  • Update and post to the organization website as well as overseeing micro sites for coalitions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of experience in communications, or a portfolio that demonstrates excellence.
  • A flair for design and an understanding of its impact on social advocacy work.
  • Proficiency with social media, especially Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
  • Experience using desktop publishing software.
  • Experience using content and constituent relationship management systems.
  • Working knowledge of HTML.
  • Experience shooting and editing photographs and video, especially using a DSLR camera and software such as Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse staff, coalitions, and community groups.
  • Ability to work independently; manage several projects simultaneously; meet deadlines; and keep organized in a fast-paced environment.
