Development Officer
Position: Full-time, permanent
Location: Austin

Planned Parenthood Texas Votes (PPTV) works to foster and preserve a social and political climate in Texas favorable to full reproductive health care access, through electoral activity, legislative advocacy and grassroots organizing, to promote and protect the mission of Planned Parenthood affiliates in Texas. PPTV is hiring a Development Officer that will work for PPTV and the Planned Parenthood Texas Votes Political Action Committee (PAC).

General Description

The Development Officer will serve as a lead team member in helping PPTV to meet annual fundraising goals and grow the donor base of the organization. This position is responsible for engaging and coordinating regional affiliates in annual development planning and joint fundraising initiatives, managing a donor portfolio through personalized cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies, and planning and executing special events. The Development Officer is also responsible for writing and assembling grant proposals for effective acquisition of grant support, and directing and managing donor communication materials, including the organization's acknowledgement process.

This position is both strategic and tactical, working closely with the Executive Director and serving as a liaison with senior development staff of regional affiliates. This position supervises and is supported by the Development Assistant.  The Development Officer reports to the Executive Director.

This is a full-time exempt position based in Austin, Texas.

Essential Functions/Accountabilities

ANNUAL PLANNING

Collaborates with the Executive Director and senior development staff of regional affiliates to:
  • Plan, implement and evaluate an annual fundraising plan to meet programmatic goals and operational needs;
  • Coordinate donor lists and the cultivation and solicitation of major gift donors and prospects as part of an integrated development plan;
  • Create an integrated annual calendar of donor contacts and events.

      PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT

      • Manages a personal portfolio of prospects and current donors. Cultivates, solicits, and stewards gifts from assigned individuals.
      • Develops detailed solicitation plans and prepares volunteers and board members for donor solicitation.

      SPECIAL EVENTS

      • Coordinates, either directly or in conjunction with senior development staff of regional affiliates, all logistical aspects of special events, including invitation lists and online and offline registration.
      • Ensures that event donor history, attendance, and other event-related information in maintained in the NGP VAN database and reported in a timely manner to senior staff.
      • Works with PPTV staff  on the design and production of event materials, including save-the-dates, invitations, programs, and various event collateral.

      GRANT WRITING & REPORTING

      • Responsible for conducting the full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals to foundations, including researching and identifying prospective foundations to match their interests with organizational funding needs.
      • Creates persuasive writing for funding to support identified needs including case statements, letters of intent, foundation proposals, and other types of solicitations as needed or requested.

      DONOR COMMUNICATIONS

      • Oversees all aspects of the gift acknowledgement process to ensure donors are acknowledged and recognized in a timely, personalized manner commensurate with their level of giving.
      • Serves as the project manager and primary copywriter for donor communications, including newsletters, acknowledgment letters, and direct mail solicitations.
      • Works with PPTV staff on the design and production of donor communication materials, including e-newsletters, and case statements.
      • Collaborates on the development of talking points for donors related to local and national issues.

      ADMINISTRATIVE

      • Supervises the Development Assistant.
      • Prepares timely reports that reflect progress to goal of development activities.
      • Hosts bi-weekly statewide calls with PPTV staff  and senior development staff of regional affiliates in furtherance of annual fundraising goals.

      Education and Experience

      • Bachelor's degree plus three (3) years of professional fundraising experience in a political or social issues setting, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired or equivalent years of work experience required.
      • Creativity and experience in the development of annual fundraising plans, gift strategies, programs, and solicitation materials that will inspire donors.
      • Significant fundraising and/or donor relationship experience including the proven ability to close gifts of $5,000+, secure new gifts from prospects, and cultivate and maintain relationships with donors that result in sustained and increasing gifts over time.
      • Demonstrated track record of success in the planning and execution of special events.
      • Experience in grants research and proposal preparation. Demonstrated success in grants acquisition preferable.
      • Understanding of and commitment to the American Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Code of Ethics.
      • Experience managing a donor database, preferably NGP VAN.
      • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills that promote productivity and efficacy in a collaborative and multi-faceted team environment.
      • Strong analytical thinking and problem solving skills.
      • Ability to organize, multi-task and effectively function in a fast paced environment, to set and achieve short and long term goals and deadlines with extremely high-level attention to detail.
      • Skill in proactively researching and quickly synthesizing information, and presenting it creatively in a variety of formats.
      • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision and consistently produce high quality work.
      • Ability and willingness to work after regular business hours, including weekends, early morning, and/or evening hours as needed.
      • Ability and willingness to travel.  Reliable means of transportation required.
