Organization Overview
Planned Parenthood is the nation's leading sexual and reproductive health care provider and advocate. The Community Outreach Group is a part of Planned Parenthood, but a separate organization that supports Planned Parenthood with short-term staffing and large-scale advocacy campaigns.
General Description
Community Outreach Group is seeking enthusiastic Senior Organizers to serve in key locations across the South. Senior Organizers will engage volunteers and supporters in Planned Parenthood's programs, build and strengthen local leadership, and support the long-term goals of the organization within a designated city.
Senior Organizers will lead organizing campaigns within their assigned region by recruiting, training, and coordinating volunteers in order to engage voters or constituents in conversations about the future. Each Senior Organizer will be assigned goals for their region, and will be responsible for reaching those goals. Responsibilities
This is a mid-level role. In this position, you will have the opportunity to:
● Break big goals into smaller ones, learn to build a campaign plan to accomplish them, develop timelines and benchmarks, and produce reports to tell the story of your progress.
● Participate in and lead campaign tactics such as phone banks, door-to-door canvasses, and community events such as house parties, town hall meetings, or street canvass teams.
● Recruit, train, and coordinate volunteers who will participate in campaign activities.
● In collaboration with current staff, develop volunteer-led outreach teams and community advisory councils.
● Develop and update a power analysis of likely opponents and key potential supporters , including state, county, municipal elected officials, influential organizations and individuals.
● Conduct community outreach to generate public awareness and support for our issues.
● In collaboration with current staff, develop relationships with key political players, opinion leaders, allied organizations and coalitions to build the base of support within the region.
Qualifications
Applicants for this position should bring the following knowledge, abilities, and attitude:
● Knowledge of and commitment to progressive causes
● Knowledge of and experience working in and with communities of color, trans, and LGBTQ.
● Has participated in and/or led trainings around anti-oppression, race justice, and social justice
● Strong interpersonal skills, including comfort meeting and talking with new people
● Effective communicator face-to-face and in writing
● Familiar with movement building, grassroots organizing, and volunteer management
● Familiarity with or excitement to learn the use of data to set goals and measure progress
● Flexible and self-motivated to identify priorities and complete work without being micro-managed
● Prior organizing experience OR prior staff management experience
● A basic understanding of campaign strategy (demonstrated by the ability to articulate the goals, strategy, activities, and results of a campaign you worked on as an employee, intern or volunteer)
● Familiarity with core tactics of organizing, including: volunteer recruitment, volunteer management, staging canvasses, phone banking, one-on-one meetings, and organizational meetings
● Has set goals and deadlines for other people, and helped them meet those goals or deadlines
● Comfortable with technology, and can learn new tools quickly
● Willing and able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends
● Licensed driver with access to a vehicle
We especially encourage applications from people who bring some of these additional skills or experiences:
● Directly-related experience in the same type of campaign or program
● Has strong ties in the city in which you are applying to work
● Understanding of reproductive justice tenants and their impact & influence on communities of color and their ability to fully access reproductive health care
● Brings some knowledge of or experience in reproductive health issues
● Has lead trainings or facilitated workshops
● Has worked with or built coalitions
● Knows how to use the VAN voter database software (strongly preferred)
● Knows how to use Excel
● Knows how to use Google email, documents, etc.
There is no formal education requirement for this position.
Compensation
This is a full-time, exempt, mid-level position with the Community Outreach Group, with an annual base salary between $42,000 - $54,000 depending on skills, experience, and qualifications.
Full-time exempt employees are also eligible for a cell phone reimbursement up to $75/month, and employer-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance.
All positions are temporary, with an expected end date in late 2017.
