A national gun violence prevention organization is seeking a communications professional to advance our mission of reducing firearms violence in America. Founded in 1988, the Violence Policy Center (VPC) is a non-profit public interest organization that approaches gun violence as a public health epidemic with a strong focus on holding the firearms industry accountable for its role in America's unacceptable rate of gun violence. This is a senior position responsible for organizational press strategy, message development, and implementation. Responsibilities include: developing and maintaining contacts with key national and regional news outlets; coordinating media events; promoting VPC studies and other materials; writing press releases, statements, editorial packages, fact sheets, and related materials; working with staff to develop effective media strategies to implement specific policy objectives on the national and state levels; working in collaboration with other organizations and advocates; overseeing VPC social media outlets and advocacy outreach to supporters. The ideal candidate has a minimum of three years of communications experience in journalism, on the Hill, or in an advocacy organization. Strong writing, editing, and proofing skills are essential. Preferred additional qualifications include experience or expertise in the public health field and fluency in Spanish. Please send resume, salary requirements, and related writing samples to VPC, Communications Director, 1730 Rhode Island Avenue, Suite 1014, Washington, DC 20036 or submit by email to jobs@vpc.org with communications director in the subject line.
