GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: The Organizer will develop and implement grasstops and grassroots strategies and campaigns to support the legislative initiatives of Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch in targeted states and regions in the United States. Specifically, this position will organize opposition to the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) "free trade" agreement and the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) by exposing these pacts' impact on food and product safety, access to affordable medicine, strong financial regulation, American jobs and wages, and democratic policy-making.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work with the Field Director and the rest of the GTW team to plan, develop and implement public education and issue advocacy campaigns.
Responsibility for developing assigned states' field program, including leading local coalition processes to develop strategies.
Work with National Campaign Director to prepare budgets and obtain authorization for state campaign travel and events expenditures.
Direct the work of the local activists and coalitions inherited from past GTW field staffers or built a new from local travel to implement state and local calling, letter writing, events and media strategies that the organizer steers the local activists to develop. Via phone, email, phone and occasional travel to target states recruit participation in local coalitions and their activities and implement the advocacy and press elements of the plans developed, including organizing organizations and individuals to call members of Congress, write letters, participate protests and other events and conduct press conferences.
Coordinate growing coalition of major online groups campaigning on the TPP and TTIP, including by identifying opportunities for their actions, organizing regular briefing calls, maintaining regular email and phone contact to keep groups engaged and informed and managing flow of content approvals by GTW Director that GTW has promised these organizations as our contribution to their increased engagement.
Conduct outreach to new constituencies awakening to the threats of TPP and TAFTA including outreach to potential allies by phone, e-mail and other communication to inform and mobilize them.
Represent Global Trade Watch at public events and coalition meetings as assigned.
Prepare organizing materials, issue updates, action alerts, and media materials needed to implement issue campaigns in coordination with Field Director and Research Director
Organize protests, events and stunts including recruiting allies and coordinating GTW team preparations of signs for protests, major mailings, creation of stunts and props and more.
Respond to information requests and serve as general point of contact for local activists in assigned states.
Maintain and provide content for relevant listserves.
Provide administrative support as needed, such as team preparations of signs for protests, major mailings, creation of stunts and props and more.
Assist in maintaining a national database of activists, organizations and key contacts.
Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: College degree preferred. Organizer training (Green Corps, Center for Third World Organizing, Midwest Academy, etc.) preferred.
Knowledge: Familiarity with
- TPP, globalization and trade issues;
- labor unions, faith, environmental, immigrant community organizations and other civil society groups
- federal legislative issue campaigning
Work Experience: At least three years of strategic advocacy and organizing and/or electoral experience at the state, national or international level.
Skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills; good motivational and interpersonal skills; well organized; good computer skills; fluency in a second language preferred, particularly Spanish or Japanese
Capabilities: Ability to work well with a wide range of people; to work independently as well as in coalition; to work well under pressure; and to adapt to changing situations on a daily basis.
Some travel required.
