The Public Interest Network is a family of more than a dozen organizations that employ a full arsenal of time-tested strategies for social change, including organizing, advocacy, research and policy analysis, litigation and socially responsible investing. Together, we stand up to powerful special interests and work on a wide array of issues, from air and water pollution to money in politics to the safety of our food systems to global warming.
For more than 40 years, the members of the network have shared a firm commitment to a model for success—one that embraces tough-minded culture of accountability, and organizing to win measurable results. These results include hundreds of laws, policies and other changes that have protected consumers, preserved the environment, and otherwise made corporations and government more responsive to the public interest. Over the years, our network has also recruited and trained thousands of people, many of whom have moved up to become leaders of our own network or elsewhere in the social change community. These activists, organizers, advocates and leaders—what some have called our "activist pipeline"—and the work ethic, strategic approach and commitment to change they embody, are ultimately our most enduring and influential legacy.
Our member organizations include: Environment America, the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, Environmental Action, Toxics Action Center, Green Century Capital Management, Green Corps, National Environmental Law Center, Frontier Group, Community Voters Project, Snowriders International, Accelerate Change, Voices for Progress, and Impact.
Job Description
The Deputy Director will have a key role in our efforts to double our grant and large donor fundraising over the next five years. This additional funding will enable the Public Interest Network to make an even bigger impact on some of the most important problems of our time, as well as recruit and train hundreds more new activists who will work for change for years to come.
To reach this ambitious goal, the Deputy Director will represent the Public Interest Network in the funder community, including foundations, major individual donors, and other non-corporate institutions. The Deputy Grants Fundraising Director also will develop short and long term strategies for broadening and deepening our funding base and directly raise money for priority Public Interest Network projects and organizations.
Specifically, the Deputy Grants Fundraising Director's responsibilities include:
§ Set fundraising goals, map out and drive forward fundraising objectives with Public Interest Network staff;
§ Research and identify appropriate foundation and donor prospects;
§ Schedule and meet (or arrange for another senior staff to meet) with at least 100 foundation executives and donor prospects annually;
§ Network with the funding community by attending conferences and events;
§ Promote the Public Interest Network through written updates, briefings, and other affinity building activities;
§ Develop, write, and pitch grant proposals to fund Public Interest Network priority projects;
§ Manage grants raised for the Public Interest Network, including monitoring project progress and reporting to the funder; and
§ Work with the rest of the development department to support the grantseeking activities of the Public Interest Network member organization's staff around the country.
§ Additionally, the Deputy Director will participate in strengthening the Public Interest Network by helping to recruit staff and by providing support for priority network programs and projects, from training staff to phone banking to helping with events.
Location
Los Angeles, CA; would consider Washington D.C. or Denver, CO for the right candidate.
Qualifications
We are looking for skilled candidates with a demonstrated commitment to social change and an appreciation of the importance of activism. We're also looking for candidates that are more motivated by the success of the movement than by individual achievement.

§ Be willing to travel extensively on a public interest budget
§ Have exceptional expository writing and verbal persuasion skills, with the ability to translate complex campaigns and programs into targeted fundraising requests;
§ Enjoy meeting new people and cultivating relationships;
§ Have a track record of academic success and proven leadership ability;
§ Be flexible, embrace new challenges, and have a can-do attitude and strong work ethic;
