Truman Center and Truman National Security Project seek a Press Secretary that will work collaboratively with senior leadership to develop and implement communication strategies to broaden the impact of programs, oversee organizational messaging and develop programs and tactics that support the organizations branding and marketing plan. S/he will work with the communications team and senior staff to position Truman in the press, develop and maintain key press relationships, and consistently elevate and articulate Truman's mission and values. S/he will ensure that Truman is viewed as the primary source, disseminator, and conduit of information within this diverse network and constituent base.
This position will report directly to the Director of Communications.
Key Responsibilities:
· Collaborate with senior leadership to develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive strategic communications plan that will broaden programmatic reach, deepen impact, and advance Truman's brand identity
· Elevate Truman's profile by developing relationships with key national security and political reporters
· Advise senior staff on communications and media issues, including during crisis situations
· Serve as the primary point of contact for national, state and local reporters and develop relationships with key reporters and producers
· Prepare and train senior staff and members to appear on TV and interact with reporters
· Find innovative ways to generate press coverage of Truman members' work and Truman policy initiatives
· Pitch and book national and regional TV/radio interviews for Truman leadership and members
· Update brochures, media kits, key messages, fact sheets, assemble news clips for distribution, & other collateral material as needed
· Develop metrics to identify impact of press coverage of Truman activities and announcements.
· Assist with coordination of media releases, TV/radio interviews, feature stories, PSAs, press conferences, etc.
· Create and coordinate public speaking engagements for the organizations spokespeople
Requirements:
· Minimum BS/BA degree with 3-4 years of experience and experience in press relations.
· Highly collaborative style; experience implementing communications strategies
· Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills
· A strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently
· Communications experience that includes a blend of advocacy and media relations
· Ability to coach and support senior leaders as spokespersons
· Experience and interest in foreign policy and national security
