Campaigns Advisor
REPORTS TO: Campaigns Manager
LOCATION: Washington, DC
COORDINATES WITH: Oxfam America's Climate Change and Energy Manager and team; the inclusive and Resilient Food Systems and Accountable Development Finance thematic teams; US Domestic Programs; Organizing and Alliances; Communications and Community Engagement; Executive Office; and Oxfam International (OI) global campaigns.
This is a fixed term position for 1 year.
PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Campaigns Advisor will strengthen OUS advocacy, influencing, and campaigns capacity and impact through the implementation of coordinated strategies on climate change and energy. The Campaigns Advisor will ensure inclusion of targeted influential constituencies as a component in all relevant influencing and campaign strategies and provide strategic support for public engagement and brand building.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Expand Oxfam America's influence and impact through coordinated influencing and campaigning strategies.
2. Support on project management of campaign initiatives and high profile events.
3. Develop and drive new tactical approaches, with an emphasis on digital campaigning approaches to achieve organizational objectives and influence the US government, companies and institutions to address poverty and hunger globally.
4. Implement plans to engage influential voices and mobilize large numbers of people to support Oxfam's campaigns.
5. Recruit and nurture relationships with key allies and partner organizations; work closely with allied organizations and networks to develop and implement collaborative strategies when strategically appropriate.
6. Sit on the climate change and energy team.
7. Monitor (a) politics in key target Congressional districts; (b) private sector targets; (c) country team priorities; and (d)global influencers across advocacy, influencing, and campaigning priority areas.
8. Represent Oxfam at national and regional events, conferences, and public forums.
9. Provide support in establishing and implementing strong monitoring, learning, and evaluation systems.
EXPECTATIONS FOR THE POSITION:
- To stay abreast of the climate change and energy policy field and associated US and international political dynamics.
- To stay abreast of professional standards, trends and issues affecting this set of responsibilities, demonstrating continuous learning in the field.
- To work effectively and collaboratively in support of a team-based culture of work, to perform all duties appropriated to a multi-cultural environment, treating all persons with dignity and respect, and will be familiar with and committed to OA mission and goals.
- S/he will have an understanding of gender equity and diversity within key areas of responsibility and a commitment to promoting gender equity and diversity in our workplace and programs.
- Domestic and international travel required 5% of time.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in environmental studies or closely relevant field or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Experience and Core Competencies:
- 3 to 5 years in public policy, advocacy campaigning, or other relevant experience.
- Experience with project management.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Proven strategic thinker and partner.
- Energetic and creative problem solver.
- Flexible and willing to play different roles as needed.
- Ability to learn new issues quickly and represent Oxfam publicly.
- Interest and proven track record in advocacy campaigning and knowledge of emerging strategies for influencing campaign targets.
- Some knowledge and interest in the fields of international development, human rights, climate change, and energy.
- Knowledge of US government policymaking processes and private sector influencing strategies.
- Knowledge of internet-based campaigning strategies.
