POSITION: Development Manager

LOCATION: Washington D.C.

SUPERVISOR: Co-Founder & Director

The Development Manager reports to the Co-Founder & Director and is the leader of the Development Program, tasked with raising an annual budget of $3.7M (in 2017) through institutional and individual giving.


The Development Manager, based in ERI's Washington D.C. office, will oversee the functioning and management of the 4-person Development Program, including the maintenance and management of ERI's existing grants and funding as well as the development and implementation of new strategies aimed at diversifying ERI's funding sources.  The Development Manager will provide strategic support to organizational leadership, including the Co-Founder & Executive Director and Co-Founder & Director, in order to achieve ERI's fundraising goal. He or she will manage all fundraising activities, including the solicitation of funds from private foundations and (increasingly) bi-lateral government donors, donor communications, and public relations, appeals, and special events.  The Development Manager will also liaise with the Communications Program on online donor communications strategies and marketing, and will have a critical role in defining and managing the expansion of the Development Program.


Major Responsibilities:

The Development Manager will be responsible for managing the Development Program; overseeing the work of the Development Associate, Development Coordinator, and Southeast Asia Development Coordinator; and working with the Executive Director, Co-Founder & Director, and Communications Manager and other staff to maintain and expand ERI's funding from private foundations as well as to aid in the development of new sources of income from individuals, events, and other institutional funders. Under the primary supervision of the Co-Founder & Director, the Development Manager will be responsible for the following:

Institutional Giving (30%):

  • Oversee the Development Coordinator's management of 30 grants from foundations, governments, and donor-advised funds
  • Draft and prepare grant proposals for new programs, including conducting background research and drafting written materials with support from program staff (with support from the Development Associate and Southeast Asia Development Coordinator), and ensure timely submission
  • Work with the Finance Director to prepare grant budgets for new programs (with support from the Development Associate and Southeast Asia Development Coordinator), as well as new projections for upcoming proposals
  • Develop and implement strategy to identify new sources of institutional revenue for existing and new programs

Individual Giving (50%):

  • Spearhead the development and implementation of individual fundraising strategies, including the development of new funding programs for individuals
  • Enhance ERI's Major Giving Program through the cultivation of current and prospective major donors.
  • Support the development of ERI's online donor outreach and social media strategy and production of communication materials (with support from the Development Associate)

General and Organizational Management (20%):

  • Support the Development Associate and Southeast Asia Coordinator in their proposal and report writing, including editing work and providing guidance on submissions
  • Serve on the Global Management Committee, comprised of the Managing Director, Mekong-Myanmar Regional Managing Director, Finance Director, and the Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning Manager
  • Support the Co-founder and Director in the creation of new proposal content, interaction with foundation contacts, and development of strategic outreach to prospects and current supporters.
  • Set annual fundraising goals, devise strategic plans to achieve them, and oversee their implementation by the Development Team
  • Supervise the Development Associate, Development Coordinator, and Southeast Development Coordinator in their work, and ensure their work is aligned with annual goals

Required Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of nonprofit fundraising/development experience, with significant foundation fundraising and grant writing experience
  • Previous work experience with major donors and/or a major giving program
  • Demonstrated interest in human rights, environmental, international, and/or development issues; familiarity with legal and campaign strategies preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills; excellent oral communication and ability to participate in public speaking events
  • Excellent written communication and research skills
  • Experience with donor databases and/or constituent management systems (e.g. Salesforce, CiviCRM, DemocracyInAction, GiftWorks, DonorPerfect)
  • Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills
  • Experience with event planning
  • Experience managing a team of people
  • Interest and enthusiasm for fundraising and communicating with people

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using social media as an outreach or advocacy tool
  • Fluency or proficiency in Spanish
  • Experience with making in-person asks to major donors
